Kathryn M. Cantrell died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at NHC HealthCare of Oak
Ridge. She had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years. Born April
4, 1916, in Sylva, N.C., she was the oldest of six children of Fred N. McLain
and Juanita P. McLain. After attending Asheville Normal and Teachers College,
she taught elementary school in Balsam, N.C. She married Robert T. Cantrell on
July 29, 1939. They have two children, Mary C. Underwood and the Rev. Dr.
Robert T. Cantrell Jr., both of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Cantrell moved to Oak Ridge in
1944 to join her husband, who began working there in 1943. She was actively
involved at First United Methodist Church, where she served as a children's
teacher, chair of the Membership and Evangelism Commission and a member of Women for
Outreach. According to her family, she was well-known for her cooking, sewing,
organizational ability and her compassion for all people, especially
children, older adults and the poor, and her gracious smile. From 1961 to 1973, she
served as executive director of the Oak Ridge YWCA. Under her leadership the
YWCA expanded its outreach service in Oak Ridge and Anderson County. Her family
said she delighted in her family, and they delighted in her. According to her
family, to her husband, she was "Toots," to her children, "Mom," to her
grandchildren, "Gonga," to her sister and brothers, "Sis" or "Kat," and to her nieces
and nephews, "Aunt Kat." Her brother, George P. McLain, and her sister, Mary
E. McLain, also died earlier. In addition to her husband and children, Mrs.
Cantrell is survived by her son-in-law, Jim Underwood, of Oak Ridge; her
daughter-in-law, Marie Cantrell, of Oak Ridge; four grandchildren, Doug Underwood of
Bountiful, Utah, Mike Underwood of Huntsville, Ala., Sarah Cantrell of
Moorestown, N.J., and Wil Cantrell of Durham, N.C.; three brothers, John McLain of
Spruce Pine, N.C., and Jim McLain and Fred McLain, both of Kingston; and by
seven nieces and three nephews. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18,
2004, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Mooney, the Rev.
Steven Martin and the Rev. Amanda Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of
contributions to First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak
Ridge, TN 37830, or YWCA Domestic Violence Program, 1660 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak
Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday,
Feb. 17, in the Parlor, Room 203, of the church. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is
in charge of arrangements.

Raymond "Bee" Carroll, 84, of Lake City, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Nov. 24, 1919, in Hancock County in
Tennessee, he was the son of Tillmon and Lillian Carroll. He was a Baptist. Mr.
Carroll is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Bourne Carroll; four sons, James
Kyle Carroll and wife, Judy, and Michael Dale Carroll and wife, Donna, Dwight
Edward Carroll and Jeffery Lynn Carroll, all of Clinton; two brothers, Dayton
Carroll and wife, Rosella, of Clinton, and Carley Carroll and wife, Kathern, of
Rutlege; and by three sisters, Nancy Johnson of Clinton, Francis Garner of
Chattanooga and Dorthey Pickins of Knoxville. He is also survived by six
grandchildren, Lisa Carroll, Jamie Carroll, Adrianne Gibby, Andrea Richardson, Nicole
Cox, Briane Carroll; four great-grandchildren, Justin, Noah, Dillion and
Jessica; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday,
Feb. 16, 2004, in the chapel of Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City with the
Rev. Calvin Braden and the Rev. Eric Gibby officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Farmers Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Clinton. The
family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Carlos Lloyd Delap, 66, of Oliver Springs, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born July 11, 1937, in Limestone County
in Alabama, he was the son of Claude Delap, who died in June 1964, and Mamie
Pope Delap, who died in July 2002. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of
Eagles No. 2514, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 1684 and the Royal
Order of Moose No. 1316. Mr. Delap is survived by his brother, Charles Delap
and wife, Stella, of Stow, Ohio; his sister, Helen Fuller and husband, Len, of
Oak Ridge; and by six nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be at 11
a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at Roselawn Cemetery in Athens, Ala. The family
requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to a charity of the
donor's choice. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb.
16, at Weatherford Mortuary.

Verna Diggs, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Nashville,
following an extended illness. Born in Hardin County in Kentucky, she was the daughter
of Elijah Lee and Catherine Gilcrest Calvert of Big Clifty, Ky., both now
deceased. Mrs. Diggs attended schools in Hardin and Grayson counties and
graduated from Western Kentucky Teachers College, now Western University, in Bowling
Green, Ky. She taught in Kentucky elementary schools while attending college.
Upon graduation, she came to Tennessee to teach in the Clinton city schools.
She returned to Kentucky during the war to teach at the Fort Knox Army Post
School, Fort Knox, Ky. She returned to Tennessee during the first year of the Oak
Ridge schools, March 1, 1944, to become a junior high teacher. She taught at
Scarboro, Robertsville and Jefferson junior high schools. She married Herbert
B. Diggs, a school principal. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during
World War II. His active duty was in the Pacific Theatre, where he was a
first lieutenant. Following the war, he established the Herbert Diggs Insurance
Agency in Oak Ridge. He died in 1986. Mrs. Diggs was a member of the New York
Avenue Church of Christ since 1944. She served as a teacher and as the director
of the Thursday Bible Nursery School for 21 years. She was a member of the Oak
Ridge Lioness Club since 1950, where she served in many offices. In the early
years of Oak Ridge, she belonged to the College Girls Club, Little Theatre
and Community Chorus. She was a member of the Woman's Club. Her family said she
had many interests, including reading, sewing, playing bridge, traveling,
entertaining and spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents
and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Lola Burkhead, Verda
Gardiner and Ardith Nelson; two brothers, Parkman Calvert and John Calvert; a
sister-in-law, Helen Calvert; and by two brothers-in-law, Tilford Gardiner and
Joe Schiermeier. Mrs. Diggs is survived by her son, Steve Diggs and wife,
Bonnie, of Brentwood; two daughters, Shirley Collins, of Nashville and Sharon
Clayton and husband, Dave, of Charleston, S.C.; and by eight grandchildren, Megan
of Phoenix, Ariz., Joshua Diggs, Emilee Diggs and Mary Grace Diggs, all of
Brentwood, Matt Collins and Katie Collins, both of Nashville and Sarah Clayton
and Chase Clayton, both of Charleston, S.C. She is also survived by two
sisters, Edna Schiermeier of St. Louis, Mo., and Ester Calvert of Louisville, Ky.; a
sister-in-law, Fern Calvert of Kentucky; a brother-in-law, George Nelson of
Louisville; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 8 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Weatherford Mortuary with Harold Scott and James L
ampley, ministers of the New York Avenue Church of Christ, officiating. A
graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

Nan LoRayne Huls Howard, 55, of Powell, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, after
battling cancer for over seven years. Born July 29, 1948, in Logan, Utah, she was
the daughter of Durwood F. Huls and Elva Retta Knudsen Huls, who lived in
Preston, Idaho, now deceased. Mrs. Howard moved from Idaho to Oregon and then to
Alaska as a young child. She survived the 1964 earthquake in Valdez, Alaska,
and graduated from high school in Valdez in 1966 as valedictorian. She then
moved with her family to Anchorage, Alaska, where she met and married Gerald
Howard. They moved from Alaska to Utah early in their marriage. They lived in
Spanish Fork, Salem, Utah and Elk Ridge, Utah over a span of 19 years. They moved
to Knoxville in 1995 to care for her mother and father-in law. Mrs. Howard
worked for several years as a secretary and engineeers' assistant in Alaska. She
was a licensed real estate appraiser in the state of Utah. She most recently
worked for Cancer Fund of America in Knoxville. In her assignments there, she
gave aid and counsel to other cancer patients and survivors. An active member
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she served as a teacher in
many different capacities, as well as leadership roles in the various
auxiliary organizations of the church. She served as Relief Society president of the
Clinch River Ward, during her first bout of cancer. She was also active in Boy
Scouts of America. Her four sons hold the rank of Eagle Scout. Her family said
she was loved and admired by all who knew her and sought out opportunities to
serve and share her talents and experience with others. An older brother,
Todd Huls, also died earlier. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a
son, Jason Howard and wife, Kendra, and their daughter, Ellie, of Las Vegas,
Nev.; a son, Matthew Howard and wife, Maria, of Powell; a daughter, Tara Howard,
a college student in Powell; a son, Lance Howard, of Powell, who is beginning
a two-year mission in Perth, Australia for the church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints; and by a son, Richard Howard, a student at Powell High School.
She is also survived by an older brother, D. Craig Huls, of Bonham, Texas; a
sister, Dana G. Hardy, of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; a brother, Wade A. Huls, of
Anchorage; and by many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with
Bishop Blomtuist officiating. Burial will be Thursday, Feb. 19, in Salem, Utah.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at the
funeral home.

Larry David Jones Jr., 25, of Harriman, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004. Born
May 22, 1978, in Oak Ridge, he was the son of Larry D. Jones Sr. and Lin L.
Jones of Harriman. He was a fourth-year apprentice for the Plumbers and
Steamfitters Union, Local No. 102. His family said, "You will always be missed and
treasured in our loving memories. We love you so much." In addition to his parents,
he is survived by two sisters, Chantal M. Jones of Knoxville and Liana D.
Jones of Oak Ridge. A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18,
2004, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Michael Woods
officiating. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions
to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale St., Memphis, TN,
38105, or to the Susan G. Komen Race for The Cure, Breast Cancer Center, P.O.
Box 11772, Knoxville, TN 37939. The family will receive friends from 6 to
7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

Pauline S. Schorn, 87, of Clinton, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Windwood
Health and Rehab Center in Clinton. Born Jan. 22, 1917, in Laudendale, Calif.,
she was the daughter of Henry G. Stumpe and Mary Peters. She was a member of
St. Therese Catholic Church in Clinton. In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband, Victor Schorn, and by several brothers and
sisters and a grandson. Mrs. Schorn is survived by two daughters, Mary Schorn of
Oak Ridge and Virginia and husband, Steve, of Anderson County; two sons, John
and wife, Ethel, of Knox County and Charles and wife, Desiree, of Dallas,
Texas; two brothers, Henry Stumpe and Harold Peters and wife, Helen, all of
Florence, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Doris Bates of Haddon Heights, N.J.; seven
grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at St. Therese Catholic Church with the Rev. Gerard
Finucane officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family
will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Holley-Gamble
Funeral Home in Clinton.
Delbert W. "Dale" Johnson, 63, of Oliver Springs, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004,
at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in

Catheline Griffin Lide, 84, of Oliver Springs, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at

Victoria Rogers, 50, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Methodist
