Subject: More Whitman County records online now
Everyone,
I'm excited to report that the 1885 Whitman County territorial census
is now on-line and available for your searching pleasure at the
Washington State Historical Records web site,
http://www.secstate.wa.gov/history/search.aspx.
The 1887 WC territorial census should be on-line by the end of next
week. The majority of the census will be on-line, but there are a few
portions that are still in the process of being transcribed and they
will be added later. I should mention that the names on the
microfilmed pages are alphabetized by the first letter of their name.
This probably means that back in 1887 (or thereabouts), some kind
government person took all of the pages that the census takers had
filled out and wrote the names in alphabetical order on new sheets.
However, I speculate whether they had access to the various census
takers so they could ask them about the spelling of names they found
hard to decipher. I just wanted to warn you that what we are
transcribing today is apparently not from the original census taker
sheets. Perhaps one of you knows more about this bit of history and
can explain it to the rest of us, since I'm only guessing what
happened?
Happy hunting!
