While searching thru old newspapers I came across the following article
and thought it just might be of interest to someone. Supposedly the
"oldest Marriage License on record".

>From the Morgan County News dated May 8, 1947

STATE OF TENNESSEE
MORGAN COUNTY--

To any regular minister of the Gospel having the cure of
souls, or any Justice of the Peace for said county, GREETING:
I, Elijah Lavender, clerk of the Court of Pleas and
Quarter Sessions of the County of Morgan aforesaid, by
virtue of the power in me vested by law, Do License You,
or Either of You to celebrate the Rites of Matrimony between
JOHN HOLLAND and POLLY SOLOMON by uniting them together
as Husband and Wife.
Given at office in Montgomery, the 15th day of Anno Domino, 1831,
and of American Independence the 56.
Signed, Elijiah Lavender, by his deputy Levi Triplett.

Would be interested to know if this is of help to anyone!
