MADEN, MR. RAY - age 91, of Wartburg, passed away Tuesday evening, December
21, 1999. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and a member of Emerald
Lodge #377 F&AM. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Margaret
Garret Maden, and one granddaughter, Patrica Milliken; brothers, Ernest, Roy,
Earl, Arthur, Will Maden; sisters, Stella and Zella Maden. He is survived by
his wife of 64 years, Oma Terry Maden; children, Margaret and James Dautel,
Mary and Bernard Dyer, Winnie and Gary Freels, Rufus and Brenda Maden, Gerald
and Betty Maden; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and a
host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends Thursday
evening, December 23, from 6-8 p.m. Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg. Funeral
and Masonic services will follow visitation at 8 p.m. with Rev. Buster Armes
and Pastor Robert Pfaff officiating. Graveside service will be Friday
morning, December 24, 11 a.m. in the Wartburg City Cemetery. Schubert Funeral
Home in charge.

PATTERSON, MILDRED MARTIN - of South Knoxville, passed away December 21, 1999
at her home. Mildred was born in Oliver Springs, Tennessee, the daughter of
Samuel and Grace Martin who was a long-time Music Teacher. Mildred attended
Bradley County High School in Cleveland, Tennessee, John Brown College in
Siloam Springs, Arkansas and The University of Arkansas. She earned her
Bachelor of Arts and Masters Degrees from The University of Tennessee. While
attending John Brown University, she entertained the idea of becoming an
Evangelistic Singer. She sang for many revival meetings conducted by the
Reverend John Brown. However, her marriage to Sexton Blair Patterson in 1928
ended this phase of her career and a possible career as an Operatic Singer.
After coming to Knoxville, Mildred chose the fields of Education and Music as
her vocation. She taught in elementary and high schools and was a Supervisor
of Music, an Administrative Assistant to the Superintentent of Schools in
Knox County and Director of Personnel. She held several positions in local
and state educational organizations. She has belonged to The Chi Omega
Sorority, The American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma,
Symphony Guild, The Knoxville Executive Club, The Tennessee Arts Council,
life member of P.T.A. and Retired Teachers Association, The National
Education Association, Tennessee Education Association, East Tennessee
Education Association and Knox County Education Association. After becoming
involved in education in Knox County, she was a member of several state
committees, which prepared music curriculums to be used state-wide. She
organized and directed The Knox County Teacher's Chorus, which became known
throughout the area for excellence in performance. For several years she was
an active Soloist appearing in musical and dramatic productions. She was a
member of The University Trio which was very popular throughout this area.
Mildred has been a member of First Christian Church of Knoxville for many
years. She served as Minister of Music of this church for twenty-five years,
concluding her service in that capacity in 1968. It was considered the best
choir in the city. Prior to this position she had served as Choir Director in
The First Baptist Church of Powell, The Powell United Methodist Church and
The Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She also served as Soloist in the
following churches: Central Methodist, Powell Methodist, Cumberland
Presbyterian, First Presbyterian, Church Street Methodist and First
Christian. Her husband died in 1961. Following her retirement in 1976, she
organized and directed "The Singing Seniors" from 1978-1990. Aside from this
involvement, she had been doing a lot of "sitting" and enjoying every minute
of life. Funeral service 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Rose Chapel Dr. Thomas Hunter
officiating. Interment will be in Lynnhurst Cemetery. The family will receive
friends 1:00-3:00 p.m. Thursday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.
