THOMAS, SAMUEL F. - age 92, a resident of Oak Ridge, formerly of Oliver
Springs, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at his home in Oak Ridge. Mr.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton Thomas and Ester Silvers
Thomas. Survivors: wife of 72 years, Carrie Gertrude Thomas of Oak Ridge;
sons, Clyde Thomas and wife, Bette of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Paul Thomas and wife,
Deborah of Paducah, Ky., Steve Thomas and wife, Treva of Oliver Springs;
daughters, Betty Hansel of Vienna, Va., Shirley Wilson and husband, Ernest of
Halls, Brenda Swanke and husband, Don of Las Crusces, NM; 8 grandchildren; 7
great grandchildren; brother, Leonard Thomas of Weaversville, NC; sister,
Bonnie Miller of Old Fort, NC. Mr. Thomas was born November 29, 1908 in Old
Fort, NC. He has lived in East Tenn. for the past 72 years. Mr. Thomas worked
as a coal miner for 23 years and as a mechanist at Union-Carbide for 23 years
before retirement in 1974. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. He
was also a deacon and served as the Sunday School Superintendent for forty
years. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 20, 2001 at 8 p.m. at Mt.
Pisgah Baptist Church with Rev. C.J. Holt and Pastor Garvan Walls
officiating. Friends may call at the church Friday, between the hours of 6-8
p.m. Burial and graveside services will be held Saturday, April 21, at 11
a.m. at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Sharp Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
SEXTON, COL. ROY D. - passed away Thursday, April 19, 2001. He was born in
Huntsville, Tenn. on April 16, 1923 to Manford E. Sexton and Wilda Baker
Sexton. He was the eldest son in a family of 13, children. He grew up during
the Great Depression, attended school in both Huntsville and Oneida and
graduated from Oneida High School in 1940. At the young age of 13 he
committed his life to Jesus Christ, was baptized and began his walk as a
Christian. He later became a member of the First Baptist Church with which he
was actively involved after retirement from the Air Force in 1970. Upon his
return to Oneida in 1970, he became actively involved as a partner in the law
firm of Sexton, Sexton Beaty & Seals, and retired from active practice of law
in 1988. He not only was actively involved with his church, but also in his
community. He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club; American
Legion Post 136 and served as Commander (3 times); member of F&AM 695 (Past
Master) 32nd Degree Mason, York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Shrine. He served on
the Funeral Detail of the American Legion from 1971 until failing health in
recent years. On August 9, 1940, he entered the US Air Corp as a private,
graduated from Officer's Candidate School, commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant
and, upon discharge, enrolled and later graduated from Tennessee
Technological University in 1948, earning a BS Degree in Business
Administration. He then entered the University of Tennessee Law School, and
upon graduating in 1950, was awarded his J.D. (Doctorate of Jurisprudence)
Degree. He was then recalled into active duty with the US Air Force where he
continued to serve until retirement on July 1, 1970. He attained the rank of
Colonel in the US Air Force and served his county as Staff Judge Advocate in
Kunsan Air Base, Korea, Lajes Field, Azores and Legal Adviser Country
representative; Staff Judge Advocate at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana;
Staff Judge Advocate at Glasgow Air Force Base, Montana, 7206 CSG, Athens,
Greece and Legal Adviser to County Representative and also served as Vice
President American Community School Board; Advisor to US Embassy; 1st
Strategic Aerospace Division (SAC) Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. His
military awards include Legion of Merit, Air Force Commendation Medal with
Oak Leaf Cluster, and UN Service Medal. Roy's paternal grandparents were
Caswell and Rachel Rosemary Cecil Sexton; his maternal grandparents were
Calvin and Nancy Duncan Baker. He was the eldest son of the late Manford E.
and Wilda Baker Sexton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie
Elizabeth Shuman Sexton, and his second wife, Dorothy Kelly Sexton. He was
also preceded in death by a brother, Manford E. Sexton, Jr., and William E.
York, a brother in law. He is survived by his three children, Roy Denver
Sexton, Jr., and wife, Sandra Hampton Sexton, Rodney Cecil Sexton, Douglas
Lee Sexton and wife, Margaret Palmer Sexton. He is survived by seven
grandchildren, Christopher Rodney, Troy Dale, Roy Denver, III, Tara Leigh,
Erick Walker, Torrey Douglas, and Brenna Erin Sexton. Additional survivors
include four great grandchildren, Jordan, Dakota, Tyler and Laura. He is
further survived by eleven brothers and sisters, Wandaline and Aaron Jones,
Wilda Theora York, Lillian Louise and Irel B. Reed, Tommy Burton and Naomi
Keith Sexton, Fayrene and William Claude Terry, Jr., Donald Gordan and June
Litton Sexton, Carol Annette and Tom Mouat, Charles B. and Patricia Miller
Sexton, Edwina Rose and Glen Greenwood, Landon Carter and Faye Nevels Sexton,
and Judy Elaine and Ronald Hutchings, and one brother in law, David Kelly. He
further leaves to mourn his passing, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts and a
host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted
Sunday April 22 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Oneida, Tenn. with
Rev. Philip Kazee and Rev. Floyd Terry officiating. Burial will follow in the
Sexton Family Cemetery in Helenwood, Tenn. with full military honors
conducted by the American Legion Post #136 of Oneida. Serving as pallbearers
will be Roy Denver Sexton, III, Erick Walker Sexton, Torrey Douglas Sexton,
Michael D. Sexton, Tommy Burton Sexton, Jr., Claude Terry, III, Andrew York
and Patrick Sexton. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5-8
p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Oneida. Jones & Son Funeral Home, Oneida,
Tenn. in charge.
SHOEMAKER, MRS. DELLA - age 87, of Oneida, Tenn., passed away Wednesday,
April 18, 2001, at the Scott County Hospital in Oneida. Born in Scott County,
Tenn., May 9, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Branston and Sylvania
Thompson Keeton. She was a member of the Mt. View Missionary Baptist Church
in Robbins, Tenn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
her husband, Delmar Shoemaker and one brother, Lonnie Keeton. She is survived
by one sister, Flora West of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a special niece and
nephew, Eddie and Joann Culver of Robbins. Funeral services will be conducted
Saturday, April 21, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home with
Rev. Gary Wilkinson officiating. Entombment will follow in the Carson
Memorial Mausoleum in Oneida, Tenn. The family will receive friends Friday
evening from 6-9 p.m. at Jones & Son Funeral Home. Jones & Son Funeral Home,
Oneida, Tenn., in charge.
