ERNEST "Ernie" MERWIN LEES, 80, of Oak Ridge, died suddenly Monday, April 29,
2002, at his home.
Born Jan. 21, 1922, in Jamestown, N.D., he was the oson of Norman and Nellie
J. Lees, both now deceased. He attended a one-room country school in Dickey
County, N.D. According to his family, the family farm was so far from town
and North Dakota weather so harsh that he had to leave home very young and
move to Ellendale and board just to attend high school.
He graduated from Ellendale High School and the University of North Dakota
School of Engineering and Mines. In college, he lived with four other
students in a converted train caboose in a community called "Camp
Depression." A monument has been erected to mark this historic site on
campus.
Mr. Lees worked five jobs at once while at the same time attending college.
Before graduation, he was recruited to come to work in Oak Ridge. Immediately
upon graduating in 1943 he began working for Eastman Kodak. He then worked as
an electrical engineer in the Reactor Development group at the Oak Ridge Y-12
Plant, retiring in the mid-1980s.
He was a charter member of the '43 Club. After retirement he traveled
extensively and served on the board of Remove Intoxicated Drivers. He also
served as a RID court monitor.
Mr. Lees enjoyed having lunch on Fridays with former co-workers. He was very
active in Parkway Presbyterian Church in Knoxville.
His family described him as a devoted father, husband, grandfather, brother,
neighbor and friend who will be missed by all.
Mr. Lees is survived by his wife, Charlotte O'Briant Shiflett Lees; a sister
and brother-in-law, Janet and Ray Mork of Billings, Mont.; his grandchildren,
Shari LaStarza, Robyn Aiken and her husband, Michael, and Jon Maney, all of
Florida; and his great-grandchildren, Brianne and Mikaela Aiken and
Christopher LaStarza.
He is also survived by his stepchildren, John and Connie Wallace, David and
Rebecca Shiflett, Lis and Budde Wolfe, and Dean and Sarah Shiflett; and his
step-grandchildren, Taylor and Rob Wallace, Helen and Henry Shiflett, and
Bradley and Alice Shiflett, all of Knoxville; his cousin, Charles Russell of
North Dakota; and seven nieces and nephews and 14 grandnieces and
grandnephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife,
Mildred Woody Lees, his daughter, Elizabeth James Maney, and a son-in-law he
considered very special, Howard Maney.
In accordance with Mr. Lees' wishes, the body is to be cremated, and burial
will be private.
A memorial celebration of Mr. Lees' life will be held at 7 tonight, May 2, at
Parkway Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gordon Adams officiating.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Parkway
Presbyterian Church, 920 Sanctuary Lane, Knoxville, TN 37932; or to the
American Heart Association, 4708 Papermill Drive, Knoxville, TN 37909.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at the church.

RODGIE EDWARD GILES, 85, of Clinton, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at his
home.
Born Dec. 10, 1916, in Anderson County, he was the son of Judd and Lou Giles.
Mr. Giles retired in September 1983 from Rust Engineering in Oak Ridge. He
was a member of the Laborers Local Union No. 818 in Knoxville.
Mr. Giles is survived by two sons, Ralph Giles and his wife, Shirley, of
Heiskell, and Roger "R.L." Giles and his wife, Debria, of Clinton; a
daughter-in-law, Sue Giles of Clinton; three sisters, Pansy Cooper and Mary
York and her husband, Lonnie, all of Clinton, and Kata Chapman of Chelsea,
Mass.
He is also survived by five grandchildren, Robert Giles and Jason Giles and
his wife, April, all of Clinton, and Allen Giles and his wife, Heather,
Christy Dotson and her husband, Shaun, and Lisa Taylor and her husband, Josh,
all of Heiskell; five great-grandchildren, Allie Giles, Kelsey Giles, Katie
Giles, Tyler Dotson and Sydney Taylor; and several nieces and nephews.
Jan Lorenzen of Andersonville is a nurse he considered special, and Angie
Flatford, also of Andersonville, is a care-giver he considered special.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by another son, Tommy
Giles; two brothers, Allie Giles and Andy Giles; and three other sisters,
Reatha Taylor, Pauline Brummett and Alma Yarbrough.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, at Woodhaven
Memory Gardens in Claxton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, May 2, at Holley-Gamble
Funeral Home in Clinton.
HARLEY CLAY ORANGE Sr., 82, of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002,
at his home.
Born June 2, 1919, in Dunbar, Ky., he was the son of Luther Mack Orange and
Tina Mae Hudnall Orange. He had lived in Oliver Springs since moving to the
area in 1955.
Mr. Orange graduated from Knoxville High School Class A in 1940. He and his
wife, Minta Whittlesey Orange, who survives him, kept foster children for 20
years.
Mr. Orange was a member of First Baptist Church in Oliver Springs and served
the church both as a deacon and as a Sunday school teacher.
He retired from the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant following 37 years of service.
In his earlier years, Mr. Orange had served as a scoutmaster with the Boys
Scouts of America. He was a member of the Atomic Beagle Club.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Mr. Orange is survived by two sons,
Harley Clay "Fuzzy" Orange Jr. and his companion, Nina Rhudy, of Sunbright,
and Daniel K. Orange and his wife, Lulu, of Oliver Springs; and three
daughters, Libby Bird of Chattanooga, Rebecca Dwarshuis and her husband,
Leonard, of Knoxville, and Kathy Pinkston and her husband, Jim, of Knoxville.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Sherri Michelle Mills, Juli LeCroy,
Heather Tuck, Isaac Bird, Chris Bird, Mat Bird, Marianna Bird, Jake Pinkston,
Josh Pinkston, Jesse Pinkston, Mitchell Orange, Lily Belle Orange and Rose
Marie Orange; and his great-grandchildren, Jonathan C.C. Mills, Hannah Grace
Mills, Sarah Kate Mills, Jake LeCroy, Cobi Grey LeCroy, Ansley Bell Tuck and
Jesse Lee Pinkston.
Kelly Stanifer and children, Lee and Maree, were considered special family
members, and Jodi Kelley and her husband, Eddie, of Oliver Springs, were
considered special friends.
In addition to his parents, a brother, Lawrence Mack Orange, and a sister,
Verna Mae O. Jory, preceded him in death.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, May 3, at First Baptist Church in
Oliver Springs. The Rev. Tony Rutherford will officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

JOHN AUDREN AGEE of Raleigh, N.C., a former longtime resident of Oak Ridge,
died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in Raleigh.
Mr. Agee worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1933 to 1944, at
which time he moved to Oak Ridge. He worked at both the Oak Ridge K-25 site
and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
He was a 32nd-degree Mason with 55 years of service.
Mr. Agee is survived by his wife of 71 years, Helen Bowman Agee; his son,
John Audren Agee Jr. and his wife, Evelyn, of Lake Lure, N.C.; his daughter,
Nola Stanley of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Lisa Scheer and Michael Agee,
both of Oak Ridge, and Laura Turner, Jack Agee, Julie Agee, Russel Stanley,
Brad Stanley and Melissa Hilton; and by many nieces and nephews, including
several in Roane County and Campbell County.
His parents, Alfred and Mary Slouson Agee, and another son, Charles Agee,
preceded him in death.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
American Cancer Society, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge,
TN 37830.
GOLDIE ANN ALCORN, 84, of Clinton, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at her
residence.
Born Nov. 25, 1917, in Logan, W.Va., she was the daughter of Martin and
Matilda Sneed Forrester.
Mrs. Alcorn had worked in earlier years as a waitress at the Twins Café in
Clinton.
She was the widow of Alfred C. Alcorn. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. Alcorn is survived by two daughters, Letha Russell and her husband,
William, of Clinton and Joyce Worsham of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sons, Robert
Brewer and his wife, Eva, of Cincinnati, George "Bob" Brewer and his wife,
Cathie, of Kingston, and Alfred Alcorn and his wife, Cindy, of Ten Mile; and
10 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by a half-brother, George Merrell of Cincinnati; a
half-sister, Mildred Merrell of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, two other sons, Julius Brewer and
Tom Brewer, preceded her in death.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens, 640 Oliver Springs Highway,
Clinton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, May 2, at the funeral
home.
JANE DILLON PHILLIPS, 57, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following an extended battle with
cancer.
Mrs. Phillips was employed in the Purchasing Department of EG&G ORTEC for 28
years.
Her family said she loved them and her friends and made them the focal point
of her life, and they described her as a loving wife, daughter, sister,
mother, grandmother and friend. They said she enjoyed travel, photography,
gardening and doing things for others.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband of 38 years, Charles Phillips; two
sons, Jeff Phillips and his wife, Heather, of Oak Ridge, and John Phillips
and his wife, Michelle, of Cordova; her grandsons, Christopher Phillips and
Cole Phillips; her mother, Mildred Hart Dillon of Wartburg; her brother,
Bobby Dillon of Wartburg; her sister, Nancy Cross of Nashville; and her
mother-in-law, Macel Phillips of Wartburg.
She was preceded in death by her father, John R. Dillon, and her
father-in-law, Jesse E. Phillips.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 2, in the chapel of Schubert
Funeral Home in Wartburg. The Rev. Tom Mooty will officiate.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
American Cancer Society, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909.

STEVEN D. BAILEY, 39, of Oliver Springs, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April
30, 2002, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born Feb. 11, 1963, in Knoxville, he was the son of Marion L. "Doc" and
Jackie Bailey. His father lives in Oliver Springs and his mother is deceased.
Mr. Bailey graduated from Clinton High School in 1981 and also graduated from
Pellissippi State Technical Community College.
He was an avid fan of the University of Tennessee football team and loved
watching and participating in sports.
In addition to his father, Mr. Bailey is survived by a brother, William
Bailey of Oak Ridge; two sisters, Luann Hannah and her husband, David, of
Livingston, and Kathy Northcutt and her husband, Tim, of Knoxville; three
aunts, Helen Greer of Oliver Springs, Imo Gene Carden of LaFollette, and Faye
Goodman of Cody, Wyo.; and three nephews, four nieces and a grandnephew.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Cumberland
Presbyterian Church in Oliver Springs. The Rev. Kenneth Johnson will
officiate.

Kidney Foundation of East Tennessee, 4450 Walker Blvd., Knoxville, TN 37917.

JOHN TOMPSON REEVE, 85, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at
Windwood Health and Rehab Center in Clinton.
Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which were
