HAZEL LEE WORTHINGTON PRIDE, 84, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at
Floyd County Memorial Hospital in New Albany, Ind., while visiting her
granddaughter.
She was born March 27, 1918, on Windrock Mountain in Anderson County, the
daughter of Bedford Forest Worthington and Nannie Katherine Roberts
Worthington.
Mrs. Pride was retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems. She had worked at
both the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant and the Oak Ridge K-25 Site.
She had also taught school at Windrock, Elverton, Clax Gap and the Reed
School of Tuppertown.
Mrs. Pride was a member of the Dixie Council of Authors and Journalists. Her
memoir "Nannie Mama" was published in 1984.
She was a member of Robertsville Baptist Church but she attended Beech Park
Baptist Church in Oliver Springs with her family. At Beech Park, she was a
member of the Senior Saints and an active member of the Deborah Sunday School
Class.
She was also a member of Oliver Springs Chapter No. 211 of the Order of
Eastern Star and she was a charter member of the Oliver Springs Historical
Society.
Her family said she was a genuine Christian who had the gift of loving
everyone. She was very concerned about the salvation of those she met and
therefore shared the gospel of Christ with everyone, they said.
She was the widow of Charles Howard Pride.
Mrs. Pride is survived by her daughter, Rena Mary Charles Pride Stewart and
her husband, Larry, of Oak Ridge; her grandchildren, Mary Michael Hajduk and
her husband, Andrew, of Clarksville, Ind., Charles Thomas Hosea and Chris
Barbra of Knoxville, Garry Keener of Bozeman, Mont., and Jonathan Stewart and
Andrew Stewart, both of Trenton, Ga.; and four great-grandchildren, Dustin
Hajduk, James Hajduk, Samantha Hajduk and Hannah Keener.
She is also survived by her sister, Bess Kassner of Dayton, Ohio; her
mother-in-law, Lucredia Pride of Oliver Springs; her brother-in-law, Edward
Pride and his wife, Ellen, of Myrtle Point, Ore.; two sisters-in-law,
Charlotte Lakey and her husband, Joe, of Oliver Springs, and Margaret W. Hall
of Lebanon, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews, whom she adored, her family
said.
Friends she considered special are Barbara Smith, Maylene Hosea, Helen
Freels, Viola Dunlap, Ruby Hunt, Myrtle Leach, Ann and David Miller, Mary
Miller, Katie Horton, Tommie Bolden, Evadean Malenovsky, and her neighbors
who were always there for her.
In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Pride was preceded in death
by a brother, B.F. Worthington; five half-brothers, Sam Worthington, John
Worthington, Ed Worthington, George Thacker and William T. Thacker; a
stepbrother, Elijah Thacker; six sisters, Bea Harrison, Marie Carr, Addie
Miles, Maggie Thacker, Maude Walls and Thelma Cox; and a stepsister, Nancy
Thacker Simpson.
A celebration of her life will be held at 8 tonight, May 23, in the new
sanctuary of Beech Park Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. The Rev. Robbie
Leach, pastor, the Rev. Gary Smith and the Rev. Michael Prince will
officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon Friday, May 24, at Oliver
Springs Cemetery.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
library or music fund of Beech Park Baptist Church, 519 W. Tri-County Blvd.,
Oliver Springs, TN 37840.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, May 23, at the church.
Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs is handling the arrangements.
