Who is Mahaley Adkins?
She is living in the household of A. D. Carroll and his wife, Martha b. abt 1815, during the 1850 Scott County, TN census. She is too old to have been Martha's mother. The same is true of Lucinda, who is living in the same household.
Eli Adkins, in his application for inclusion in the Cherokee fund, lists a Mahaley as the child of Henry Adkins and Mima Green in Campbell County. This Mahaley is in the proper age group to be that Mahaley, but I have no connecting link.
During the July Term of Court 1851 she was allowed $5.00 as a pauper of the County. The same Court session allows Wm. Carrol $15.00, the reason not given. It was probably for the support of Mahaley. Again, during the July 1852 Term of Court Mahaley was allowed $5.00 as a pauper of the County.

WILL: Alexander Carroll Dated: 9 August 1851 Proven: September Term 1851
To my two children, Alexander Carrol and Sarah Carol. I do appointed John
Massengale and Andrew Low and Martha Carrol or Martha Embree the mother of
Alexander Carrol and Sarah Carrol to have a child's part during life.
Signed Alexander (his mark) Carrol. Witnesses: Inoch Robinson, W.
Massengale, Phillip Low. September Term 1851, Since no executor was named
in will, Martha Carrol was appointed administrator. September Term 1851,
Martha Carrol made application for year's support, and Allen McDonald, John
L. Smith, Cutbirth Webb were appointed commissioners to lay off the year's
support of provisions on hand belonging to the estate of Alexander Carrol,
deceased. September term 1853, Pleasant Chambers, Amos McDonald with the
surveyor of Scott County were appointed commissioners to allot a dower in
the real estate of Alexander Carrol, deceased, to Martha Carrol, his widow.
(Scott County Court Minutes, 1850-1855, pages 140, 141-142, 143, 227, 300,
305, 311).
There is something peculiar about the above listings.
In the will and in the census, Martha Embree (Hembree, Embrey?) is identified as the wife of Alexander Carroll.
Either her maiden name or her name from a previous marriage must have been Hembree (or some variation).
Martha is approximately the same age as Alexander, which could indicate no previous marriages.
Lucinda is only 11 years younger than Martha, which would make Martha very young to have been a mother. They may have been sisters.
Mahaley Adkins, living with them, was born approximately 55 years before Martha and Alexander were born, and would have been 66 years old when Lucinda was born. Assuming the dates are close from the census she cannot be the mother of any of these people in the 1850 census.
If she was Alexander's grandmother, then her last name would be Carroll, not Adkins assuming she took her husbands name.
If she was Martha's grandmother, then her last name would be Hembree, not Adkins, assuming she was married and took her husbands last name.
Any help that can be furnished to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
