RULE, WALTER STUART, JR. - age 79, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, April 02,
2003 at the Methodist
Medical Center. He was born May 29, 1923 in Louisville, KY, son of the late
Rev. Walter Stuart Rule, Sr. and Anne Marinda Tarwater Rule. He was a veteran
of WWII serving with the US Army in 423rd Infantry Regiment. Mr. Rule was
captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was held as a prisoner of war in
Germany from December 1944 until May 1945. He was the recipient of two Purple
Hearts. He was a 1948 graduate from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville)
with a BS in Business Administration/ Personnel Management. He retired in
1985 from Martin Marietta Energy Systems / K- 25, after 37 years, where he
was a purchasing agent. He was a member of the First Baptist Church since
1945, and served as deacon, church treasurer and sang in the choir. He was
also a member of the U.T. Century Club. Mr. Rule was an avid UT fan and loved
sports in general, particularly bowling and golf. He was preceded in death by
his first wife, Dorothy Robertson Judy Rule in August 1980 and by sisters,
Dr. Evelyn T. Rule and Mary Sue Rule. He is survived by: wife of 21 years,
Virginia Boyt Fallin Rule; son, David Stuart Rule and wife Karen Soard Rule
of Maryville; daughter, Anne Judy Rule of Houston, TX; step-daughter, Sandra
Fallin Glover and husband Rev. David Glover of New Market; brother, James
Robert Rule and wife Virginia of Knoxville; grandchildren, April Glover
Martin and husband Lyonel of Haleyville, AL Joshua Stuart Rule, Daniel Edward
Rule and Judy Michelle Rule, all of Maryville. Funeral services will be held
on Friday, April 4, 2003 at 8:00pm at the First Baptist Church with Rev.
David Glover officiating. Graveside services will be held on Saturday at
11:00 am at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with military honors provided by the
Volunteer State War Era Honor Guard. The family asks that any memorials be in
the form of contributions to the Music Fund of First Baptist Church, 1101 Oak
Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends on
Friday from 6:30 - 8:00pm at First Baptist Church. Weatherford Mortuary, Oak
Ridge, in charge of the arrangements.
