Ida Meyerson Coveyou, 82, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born Ida Charlotte Meyerson on Oct. 19, 1920 in Chicago, Ill., she was the
daughter of Joseph and Rena Meyerson.
Mrs. Coveyou graduated in 1938 from Hyde Park High School in Chicago, after
which she worked for several years in Chicago. On Sept. 25, 1943, she married
Robert Coveyou and they came to Oak Ridge shortly thereafter. She was employed
as a junior health physicist at the X-10 site of the Manhattan Project until
1948, when she left before the birth of her son.
In the late 1950's, Mrs. Coveyou returned to college and received her
bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee in 1960. Later she also received a
master's degree from UT. After graduation, she began a 40-year career as a
teacher and tutor of remedial reading and mathematics. She was continuing to
tutor two students up to the week before her death.
She also taught among the first Adult Basic Literacy courses in Tennessee,
and wrote and consulted on effective methods for teaching remedial reading. Her
family said she took great pleasure in the progress of her students, first in
their growing reading or math comprehension while she was tutoring them and
then in their later lives.
Throughout her time in Oak Ridge, her family said she expressed her passion
for justice through involvement in social action, particularly related to
racial justice.
Early in Oak Ridge history, she worked with the Scarboro Day Care Center and
the Scarboro High School. Later on, she was an active member and officer of
the Oak Ridge Community Relations Council, an interracial civil rights group in
Oak Ridge in the 1950's and 1960's.
In recent years, she was a trustee of the Sallie McCaskill Memorial
Scholarship Fund, which she helped to found, and which awards college scholarships to
selected minority students.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1996.
Mrs. Coveyou is survived by her son, Michael Coveyou and wife, Carolyn, of
Des Moines, Iowa; her brother, Seymour Meyerson and wife, Lotte, of Asheville,
N.C.; and by her sister, Sarah Houghton and husband, Harold, of Richmond,
Calif.
She is also survived by three nieces, Sheela Mierson and husband, Howard
Stanfield, of Newark, Del., Elana Kann of Asheville, and Joy Weiner and husband,
Jack, of Centreville, Va.; two nephews Oliver Houghton of Fremont, Calif., and
Darrell Houghton of Boulder, Colo.; and by two grandnephews and one
grandniece.
Diantha Pare, Aase Brynestad, Caryl Kaplan, Peter Luippold, Alta Hicks, Kit
Kuperstock, Lavada Chisholm, Bettie and the late Henri Levy, Eleanor and Roger
Clark, and Don and Janice Reynolds, are all considered special friends,
several of which her family said helped her tremendously in recent years.
A memorial service will be at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at
a later date. The body was donated to the Anatomical Bequest Program of the
University of Tennessee Medical Center.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the
Sallie McCaskill Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Diantha Pare, 117 Wendover

Kathy Lynn Knaff Dozier, 45, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born Dec. 27, 1957, in Oak Ridge, she was the daughter of Robert Shirrell
Knaff Sr. of Oliver Springs and Edna Harriett Burum, now deceased.
Mrs. Dozier was an avid softball player and her family said she tremendously
enjoyed singing with the Knaff Family and fishing. She was baptized by the
late Rev. Maceo Roddy at Little Leaf Baptist Church in Oliver Springs at an early
age and was an active member of the Junior Choir for many years. In her
latter years, she became a very involved member of the Serenity Club of Oak Ridge.
She thoroughly enjoyed taking care of her family and being of service to
others.
A younger sister, Barbara Jane Knaff, also died earlier.
In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Edward C. Dozier;
a son, Karon Donnell Knaff and wife, Melissa, of Clinton; a step-son, Edward
Dozier of Detroit, Mich.; three daughters, Iesha Letisha Myers of Hampton, Ga.,
and Candice Iman and Sarah Elizabeth Dabbs, both of Oak Ridge; two
step-daughters, Jacienta Dozier and Ebony Dozier, both of Detroit; her father-in-law,
Donald L. Dozier, of Belleville, Mich.; her mother-in-law, Halla M. Krisel of
Detroit; and by a grandmother, Aurora Knaff of Oliver Springs.
She is also survived by five sisters, Delphine Goins Wilkerson and husband,
Arnold, of Harriman, Roberta Adele Knaff of Smyrna, Ga., Dr. Sheila Knaff
Korvayan and husband, Matthew, of Hampton, Ga., Sarah Knaff Carlton and husband,
Robert, of Nashville, and Shena Knaff of Oliver Springs; two sisters-in-law,
Sylvia Webb of Detroit and Donna Dougherty of McDonough, Ga.; a brother, Robert
Knaff Jr., of Oliver Springs; three brothers-in-law, Donald M. Dozier and wife,
Michelle, of Ypsilanti, Mich., Thomas Dozier of Detroit, and Kenneth Dozier
and wife, Pamela, of Nashville; two grandchildren, Jalen Knaff and Jacob Knaff,
both of Clinton; three uncles, James Robinson and wife, Evelyn, of
Naperville, Ill., William Knaff and wife, Lily Mae, of Coolidge, Ga., and Calvin Knaff
of Oliver Springs; four aunts, Dezora Wells and husband, Clarence, of Loudon,
Barbara Soles of Oliver Springs, Wilma Burum of Oak Ridge and Verleen Knaff of
Kansas City, Kan.; two great uncles, Leitha Fritts and wife, Becky, of Oliver
Springs and Albert Fritts and wife, Marian, of Asheville, N.C.; two great
aunts, Myrtle Lee Burum of Clinton and Betty Jo Hawkins and husband, Clarence, of
Oak Ridge; and by several other relatives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Oak Valley Baptist
Church with the Rev. Hardil Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Carter's
Bluff Cemetery in Oliver Springs.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the
church.
Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Layman Dewey "L.D." Price Jr., 58, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, June 4,
2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born July 28, 1944, in Sevierville, he was the son of Layman Dewey Price Sr.
and Grace Braden Price, both now deceased.
He was a member of Freewill Baptist Church of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Price is survived by his wife, Juanita Forrister Price; four brothers,
W.L. "Bill" Price, N.W. "Jody" Price, Jim Price and Bobby Price; two sisters,
Dell Brown and Iva Rose; and by seven step-children, Freeman Goad, Allen Goad,
James Goad, Eddie Goad, Mary Sue Pride, Wilma Jean Jeffers and Daisy Smith.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, in the chapel of Martin
Oak Ridge Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Braden Flats-Indian Bluff
Baptist Church Cemetery in Briceville.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Joseph Skorski, 79, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Briarcliff
Health Care Center.
Weatherford Mortuary is in charge arrangements, which were incomplete at
press time.
