Mamie May French, 90, of Oliver Springs, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at her
home surrounded by her family and friends.
Born Aug. 2, 1913, in the Fairview community of Oliver Springs, she was the
youngest of 12 children of Abe and Matie May, both now deceased.
Mrs. French was a lifelong resident of Roane County and a member of the Order
of Eastern Star Oliver Springs Chapter and of the New Fairview Baptist Church
in Oliver Springs.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James
"Eddie" French, with whom she founded French's Markets, and by two children,
James D. French and Shirley F. Huling.
Mrs. French is survived by four sons, Robert "Gene" French of Knoxville,
Thaxton French and wife, Brenda, of Swansea, S.C., and Howard French and wife,
Vickie, and Ray French and wife, Sheila, all of Oliver Springs; four daughters,
Mattie Freeman and husband, J.R., Betty Bray and husband, Roger, Elaine Johnson
and husband, Malcolm, and Lois Yarborough and husband, Jerry, all of Oliver
Springs; and by 32 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and nine
great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at New Fairview
Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Queener and the Rev. Kenny Stubbs officiating.
A graveside service will follow at New Fairview Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Sharp
Funeral Home in Oliver Springs
Virginia Hatcher, 78, of Erwin, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at her home.
Mrs. Hatcher was a Unicoi County native and the daughter of Bernie C. and
Pearl Tipton Bailey, both now deceased.
She was employed by the former Southern Potteries of Erwin and was a member
of First Christian Church in Erwin.
Mrs. Hatcher is survived by her husband, George Hatcher; three daughters,
Beth Briggs and husband, Larry, of Unicoi, Brenda Rudman and husband, Mel, of
Indian Wells, Calif., and Linda Rohling of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Roger
Callahan, Michael Callahan, Shannon Briggs, Julie Briggs and Jodi West; and by
one great-grandchild, Cody Callahan.
She is also survived by three sisters, Betty Slagle and husband, Wayne, of
Salt Lake City, Utah, Gail Bailiff and husband, Eddie, of Clinton, and Brenda
Day and husband, Millard, of Lenoir City; and by three brothers, Paul Bailey and
wife, Myrt, of Texas, Earl Bailey and wife, Anne, of Apex, N.C., and Ramel
Bailey and wife, Betty, of Nashville.
A graveside service will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at
Evergreen Cemetery with Joel Trammel officiating.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to
First Christian Church, 307 S. Main Ave., Erwin, TN 37650.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, in
the chapel of Valley Funeral Home in Erwin
JoAnn Chapman, 56, of Coalfield, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs is in charge of arrangements, which were
incomplete at press time.
Flora Isabelle Crabtree, 89, of Farragut and formerly of Oak Ridge, died
Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Baptist Hospital West in Knoxville.
Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete at
press time.
Mary Jenkins, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Hillcrest North
Nursing Home in Knoxville.
