============================================MILLER, NORMAN C. age 59, of
Aldie, Virginia, formerly of Clinton, passed away Friday, September 5, 2003 at the
Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Virginia. He was born February 25, 1944 in Bell
County, Kentucky. Norman was a member of Edgemore Baptist Church. He retired
from the U.S. Government. Preceded in death by father, Glendon T. Miller.
Survivors: wife, Shirley Carol Miller of Aldie, VA; mother, Teeeda Miller of
Clinton; son, Norman C. Miller, Jr. of Winchester, VA; daughters, Shawna D.
Miller of Berryville, VA, Melissa D. Howell of San Clemente, CA; 1 grandchild;
several aunts, uncles & extended family members. Graveside services will be held
11:00 am, Saturday, September 13, 2003 at Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton
with Rev. Clark Brown officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of
National Capital Region, 9300 Lee Highway, Fairfax, VA 22031-1207. Holley-Gamble
Funeral Home of Clinton in charge of all local arrangements.
POINTER, CLARENCE SR. - age 64, of Andersonville, passed away Thursday,
September 11, 2003 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. He was a member of
Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. He retired from the Anderson County School
system as a custodian. Preceded in death by son, Clarence Pointer, Jr.;
parents, Willie & Rena Bumgardner Pointer; brother, Ralph Carl Pointer. Mr. Pointer
was born November 1, 1938 in Anderson County. Survivors: wife, Martha Jackson
Pointer of Andersonville; sons, James Lee Pointer of Clinton, Jesse Elbert
Pointer of Andersonville, Harold Benjimin Pointer of Andersonville; daughters,
Diane Lyons & husband, Wesley of Andersonville, Stacy Lee Shepherd of Oak
Ridge; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sisters, Willie Prosise of Claxton,
Betty Jean Brooks of Oliver Springs Highway, Shirley Taylor of Clinton. The
family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 12, 2003 at
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m.
Saturday, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble with Rev. Harold Ellis & Rev. Ray Hill
officiating. Interment will follow the service at Liberty Baptist Church
Cemetery in Heiskell. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home of Clinton in charge of all
arrangements.
SPAIN, HERBERT C. - age 92 of Knoxville, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday
evening, September 10, 2003 at St. Mary's Holston Health Center after an
extended illness. Born September 17, 1910 in Robertson Co., Tenn. to Ike and Emma
Spain. He had retired from K-25 Union Carbide with 32 years service. He was a
longtime member and usher at First Church of the Nazarene where he was known to
all of the church children as their "Candyman". He was an avid gardener and
enjoyed fishing & hunting. He will be greatly missed by his family and his
church family. Preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Floy; three
brothers; two sisters and son in law, William DeWees, Sr. Survived by his
daughter, Anita DeWees Hooker and husband, Earl of Lancaster, Ohio; son, Herb
Whitaker and wife, Nancy of Burley, Idaho; sister, Beatrice Walden of Greenbriar,
Tenn.; many nieces and nephews; grandsons, William DeWees, Jr. and wife,
Vicky of Bourbonnais, Ill. and Nate Whitaker of Ft. Bragg, NC; granddaughter,
Renee Ellenwood and husband, David of Belpre, Ohio; great grandchildren, Mallory,
Tyler & Alex DeWees, Clay & Zane Ellenwood. He was loving referred to by his 8
grand and great grandchildren as "Pee-Paw". Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday at
First Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Rick Shelton officiating. The body
will lie in state 1-2 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow in Lynnhurst
Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene, 538 Vanosdale
Rd., Knoxville, Tenn. 37909. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Saturday
at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.
WOODY, HOWARD "PAP" - age 79 of Oak Ridge passed away Wednesday, September 10
at Methodist Medical Center. He was born in Spring Hill, Tennessee and spent
his early years working with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Washington
State and at the Willow Run Munitions Plant in Ann Arbor, Michigan where he met
his with of 59 years, Jane Smith from Harlan, Kentucky. In 1975 he retired
after 30 years with Union Carbide, K-25 Plant where he worked as a plumber and
union steward. He was an active businessman as president of Woody Valley
Enterprises where he developed Woody's Restaurant and Tri Country Golf Course and
dealt in raw land and rental property in Oak Ridge. He was an active member of the
Anderson County Democratic Party and the United Methodist Church. He was an
outgoing and friendly person with an imaginative sense of humor, quick with a
joke and was happiest when with family and friends fishing and playing golf. He
was preceded in death by his parents Maxie and Etta Gidcomb Woody of Spring
Hill; 11 brothers and sisters: Robert S. Woody of Nashville, Fulton Woody of
Greenville, his twin Herbert Woody, Billy Woody, James Woody, Amanda Eugenia
Woody, Ruby Woody Bolton, Carrie Woody Gray, Laura Mai Woody, and Pauline Woody
all of Spring Hill. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Jane Smith Woody;
his son and daughter in law John Howard Woody and Geneva Collen Woody, his son
Michael Wayne Woody, all of Oak Ridge and his daughter and son in law Laura
Jane Morris and Bruce Morris of Anderson County; his brother and sister in law
Max Woody and Sarah Woody of Hendersonville; three grandsons: John Howard Woody
Jr. and wife Melissa Woody, their son Lee Lamance and daughter Vanesa Lamance,
James Herbert Woody and wife Donna Woody and their daughter Mercedes, all of
Oak Ridge and Brandon Williams and wife Kristy Williams of Sweetwater, Kief
and wife Üslem Morris of London, UK; sister in law Madge E. Smith and her son
Charlie Smith of Lexington, Kentucky; and numerous nieces and nephews. Donations
may be made to United Methodist Church. Interment will be held Saturday
September 13 in Oak Ridge Memorial Park at 10:00 am. Pallbearers will be John
Howard Woody Jr., James Woody, Bruce Morris, Brandon Williams, Charlie Smith, and
Max Woody Jr. Family will receive friends Friday September 12 from 6:30 p.m.
until 8:00 p.m. with funeral services to follow at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak
Ridge.
