CHANDLER, JOHN M. - 80, of Oak Ridge, suffered a heart attack at home on
Tuesday, April 13, and was taken to Methodist Medical Center where he was later
pronounced dead. Mr. Chandler was a native of Salisbury, North Carolina. His
education included B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from North
Carolina State University, Advanced Engineering Certificate in Electrical
Engineering from the University of Missouri, and a certificate in Nuclear Engineering
from the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. During World War II, Mr.
Chandler served in Europe with General Patton's Third Army, 5th Infantry Division,
Company C, 10th Infantry Regiment. On December 16, 1944, Mr. Chandler's
division was ordered to Eckternach, Luxembourg, where he joined in the American
counter-attack against the German army during the Battle of the Bulge. He was on
the front lines in combat from December 18 to January 28, 1945, when he was
taken prisoner at Putscheid on the Our River. In early March, Mr. Chandler
managed to escape while being transported between labor camps in Germany and led
several other POWs back to advancing American forces and freedom. Mr. Chandler
had more than four decades of experience with nuclear chemical processes and
waste management, working primarily at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He served
the Atomic Energy Industry in pilot plant development and demonstration of
radiochemical separation processes; uranium fuel preparation; construction
projects for IPET and the Remote Operations Maintenance Demonstration (ROMD) pilot
plant at the EGCR site of the LMFBR, now called the Fuel Recycle Division. As
Manager of the ORNL Metal Recovery Plant, he processed ton amounts of spent
nuclear reactor fuel to recover and purify large amounts of uranium, plutonium,
and americium. Earlier in his career, he also served as mill superintendent of
Union Carbide's Uravan and Rifle, Colorado, uranium and vanadium mills. Loaned
to the Atomic Energy Commission in 1973, he was assigned to assist in the
preparation of the first version of an environmental impact document for the
nuclear reactor fuel cycle. Mr. Chandler was proud of his long service with
Serenity Club in Oak Ridge, leading group meetings there for nearly two decades. He
was preceded in death by: a sister, Betty Alice Williams of Lynchburg, VA. Mr.
Chandler is survived by: his wife of sixty years, Margaret; two sons, Dr. John
M. Chandler and his wife Susi of Bristol, Tennessee, and Ralph C. Chandler
and his wife Mirtha of Atlanta, Georgia; Brother, Robert L. Chandler and his
wife Valerie of Terrell, NC; Sister, Polly Tillman and her husband Harvey of
Newport, NC, and three grandsons, Jeremy and Chris Chandler of Bristol and Atticus
Graybill of Atlanta. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of
contributions to Boy Scout Troop 3 in Bristol, Tennessee, care of First
Presbyterian Church, Attention: Anna Booher, 701 Florida Avenue, Bristol,
Tennessee, 37620. Mr. Chandler was an Eagle Scout and a long-time supporter of the Boy
Scouts. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 16, from 6:00 -8:00pm

HUNLEY, JAMES RALPH JR. - age 54, of Andersonville, Tennessee passed way
Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. He was
member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. He was employed for past 25 years
as a sheet metal worker. He is presently employed by Bechtel Jacobs in Oak
Ridge at the Y- 12 plant. He was preceded in death by: grandson, James Ray
Hunley; mother-in-law, Mary Helen Ridenour. Survivors: wife of 35 years, Henrietta
Ridenour Hunley of Andersonville, TN.; daughter, Tammy Lee Bell & husband,
Tim, of Andersonville, TN; sons, James R Hunley, III & wife, Melissa, of
Andersonville, TN, Joseph "Jody" R. Hunley & wife, Miranda, of Andersonville, TN;

Holley- Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with funeral service to follow at 3:00 pm
in the chapel with Rev. Don Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Mt.
Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery in Andersonville. Memorials may be

HUMPHREY, JESSE JAMES - age 88, of Heiskell, Tennessee, passed away
Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was a member
of Deep Springs Baptist Church. He was retired from U. S. Forestry Dept.
During his employment he worked at the "Heiskell Fire Tower". He enjoyed hunting &
other outdoor activities. He was a WWII Veteran with the U.S. Army. He was
preceded in death by: wife, Mary Helen Humphrey; parents, Berry & Martha
Humphrey; sisters, Mahalia Humphrey, Nilie Bridges, Stella Humphrey; brothers, John &
Benn Humphrey. Survivors: sons, David L. Humphrey & wife, Donna of Heiskell,
TN, Donnie C. Humphrey & wife, Bess, of Georgia; grandchildren, Jessica
Humphrey, Matt Humphrey, Don Humphrey, Karen & Debbie Humphrey; 2 great
grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 16, 2004 from 6 to 8pm at
the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with funeral service to follow at 8:00 pm in
the Chapel with Rev. Gary Jenkins officiating. Family & friends will meet
Saturday, April 17th at 10:30 am at Sartin Cemetery for graveside services with full

MILES, EDWARD DAVID (TED) SR. age 90 of Clinton, died at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday,
April 13, 2004, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. Veteran of WWII, serving in
the U.S. Navy. Preceded in death by: wife, Della Zoe Miles and several
siblings. Survivors: daughter, Linda Hall of Knoxville; son and daughter-in-law, Dave
and Linda Miles of Waverly, TN; grandchildren, Lisa Hall Scarborough and
Laura Blanock; great-grandchildren, Abby Nicholas, and Ella Zoe Blanock; sister,
Ada Wright of Concord; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Richard E.
Hall. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. Friday at Highland Memorial
Cemetery for a 10:00 a.m. graveside service and interment. Rev. Damon Patterson

PARKS, CARTER OTHYN - 75, of Clinton departed this life on April 12, 2004.
The son of Cecil Clifford Parks and Arpie Sisson Parks, he was born on December
16, 1928 in a nineteenth century log cabin in Briceville, Tennessee. Mr. Parks
was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and has been a resident of
Anderson County most of his life, except for nine years of military service. He was
a member of the United States Marine Corps and was a Korean War combat
veteran. He met his wife Bobbie while stationed in North Carolina, and they recently
celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Carter retired from TVA in 1983,
where he was a materials engineer during the construction of several power
plants in East Tennessee. A driver for Fox Toyota for the past 20 years, he
loved to travel by car and enjoyed hiking and walking. His favorite hobby was to
visit the Blue Ridge Parkway of North Carolina, where he knew every trail and
mile marker by heart. He was the beloved father of five children and "Granddad"
to ten grandchildren and two great- grandchildren, as well as a favorite
uncle to dozens of nieces and nephews in Tennessee, North Carolina and Ohio. He
will be sorely missed by friends and family, including his extended family in
Morgan County and Bobbie's family in North Carolina. Carter lived each day to
the fullest and enjoyed NASCAR, bluegrass music, fishing with his brothers and
grandsons, growing tomatoes and corn each summer, and cooking Sunday dinner for
his family every week. Survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Dean
Chrismon Parks (Bobbie); son Danny Cecil Parks of Lake City; daughters Seaira
Stephenson and husband Brad of Oak Ridge, Angie Bunch of Lake City, Regina
McCallister and husband Dennis of Strawberry Plains, LaVerne Doucet and husband Bert of
Gueydan, Louisiana. Brother Lyndel Parks of Memphis; sisters Emily Duncan of
Clinton and Betty Lynn Vowell and husband Quentin of Jacksboro. Brother-in-law
Herbert Chismon and wife Margaret; sisters-in-law Lutitia Hill, Gladys Bland,
Luvina White and husband Allen all of North Carolina. Grandchildren Preston
Parks, Barbara Julian and husband Brad, DeAnna Bunch, Dustin Bunch, Jesse
McCallister, Landon McCallister, and Derek Lovely of Tennessee and Dean Fontenot,
C.J. Fontenot, and Robert Fontenot of Louisiana. Great-grandchildren William and
Breanna Julian, and special niece Renee Burchfield and husband Dennis, all of
Clinton. Reunited in Heaven with his parents at last, Carter was preceded in
death by father and mother Cecil Clifford Parks and Arpie Sisson Parks;
brothers Chester Parks, Albert Joseph Parks, Cecil Parks, Jr.; sister Opal Braden;
son-in- law Michael Ray Bunch; and other family and friends. The family will
receive family and friends on Thursday April 5, 2004 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at
Jones Mortuary in Clinton, the funeral service will be Friday, April 16, 2004 at
1:00 PM. in the chapel of Jones Mortuary with the Rev. Tom Byrge officiating
with the interment following at Clinch River Baptist Church Cemetery in Lake
City. Jones Mortuary in Clinton in charge of all arrangements.
