Effie Johns Beavers, 85, of Greenhill, Ala., died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at
Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home in Greenhill. She was a resident of Oak
Ridge for over 45 years, where she was a member of Highland View Church of Christ.
She retired from Lovemans-Miller Department Store before moving back to
Alabama 25 years ago. She is survived by two brothers, Marcus Johns and wife,
Frances, and Roy Waylon Johns, all of Florence; two sisters, Lucille Johns Quillen
and husband, Cyrus, of Greenhill, and Joyce Johns Bowman and husband, Dave,
formerly of Oak Ridge; her sister-in-law, Opal Johns, of Greenhill; and by
several nieces and nephews. The funeral was to be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 28,
2004, in the chapel of Greenhill Funeral Home in Florence, Ala., with Fred
Dillon, Dave Bowman and Cyrus Quillen officiating. Burial will be at Shiloh
Cemetery in Greenhill.
James Kyle Loy, 68, of Harriman, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at his home.
Born Sept. 10, 1935, in Union County, he was the son of Andy Loy and Mattie
Wilson Loy, both now deceased. He moved to Roane County early in his childhood.
Mr. Loy was a retired equipment operator. He retired from construction in 1997.
He was a member of Clax Gap Baptist Church and served the church as a trustee.
His family said he enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially
his grandchildren, and playing practical jokes. In addition to his parents, he
was preceded in death by a sister, Reba Goins, and by two brothers, Eugene
Loy and Conley Loy. Mr. Loy is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lillian Rose
Loy; his daughter, Pat Sheldon, of Harriman; three sons, Ricky Loy and wife,
Treva, the Rev. Sam Loy and wife, Trish, and David Loy and wife, Teresa, all of
Harriman; four grandchildren, Brandon Loy, Ashley Loy, Brittany Loy and Connor
Loy; and by his great-grandson, Cameron Loy. He is also survived by his
brother, Andy Loy, of Harriman; a special niece, Brenda Mcghee; several nieces,
nephews, cousins and extended family members; and by his special buddies, Travis
Lively, Johnny Ladd, Steve Kennedy and Bob Braham. The funeral will be at 8:30
p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2004, at Clax Gap Baptist Church in Harriman with
Randy Loy, the Rev. Sam Loy and the Rev. James Petty officiating. A graveside
service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 29, at Clax Gap Baptist Church
cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the
church. Sharp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mildred Pickett Taylor, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at her
home. Born Jan. 22, 1918, in St. Claire, Ala., she was the daughter of John
and Mary Mortimore Pickett. She met and married Robert Taylor Jr. and moved to
Oak Ridge in 1941. To this union were born one son, Ronald Taylor, and two
daughters, Delores Taylor and Janie Taylor. Mrs. Taylor was a member of True
Light Baptist Church and an outstanding member of the Oak Ridge community. Her
family said she was dearly loved by all who knew her. In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Taylor Jr., on Feb. 17,
1985; her daughter, Delores; two brothers, John and Lewis; and by four sisters,
Rosie, Zanobie, Alzora and Veola. Mrs. Taylor is survived by her son, Ronald
Taylor and wife, Sherri, of Georgia; a daughter, Janie Taylor, of Oak Ridge; six
grandchildren, Renee Taylor and Julian Taylor, both of Oak Ridge, Erik Taylor
of Louisiana, Anastasia Watkins of North Carolina and Del'Ressia Parker and
Delandon Jackson of Georgia; and by eight great-grandchildren, Bianca Taylor and
Jubrice Taylor, both of Oak Ridge, Malik Matthews of Knoxville, and Darrian
Parker, Jamesha Parker, Rashaya Parker, Jarressia Parker and James Parker, all
of Georgia. She is also survived by 12 cousins, Leroy Barlow and Anita Starks,
both of Ohio, Claudette Price, Marion Price, Valerie Price, Michael Price,
Dianne Kennedy, Dwight Kennedy and Viola Robinson, all of Alabama, Mickey Starks
of California and Bessie Whitehead and Vera Whitehead, both of Illinois; her
stepdaughter, Linda Williams, of Oak Ridge; her devoted friends, Mary Ann
Dixson, Debra Booker, Marie Wollen and Marie Davis, all of Oak Ridge; and by
several other relatives and friends. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April
30, 2004, at True Light Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Darris Waters
officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Sinai Baptist Church cemetery in
Clinton. The family will gather at the church immediately following the burial. The
family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Weatherford
Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Helen Baker Whittenburg, 78, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge with her family by her side. Mrs.
Whittenburg moved to Oak Ridge in the mid 1940s, where she has been a longtime
resident. She has owned and managed commercial properties which she and her late
husband, Lee R. Whittenburg, developed. Born Jan. 15, 1926, in Dadeville, Ala.,
she was the daughter of Dallas and Lillian Baker. She graduated in 1943 from
Camp Hill High School in Alabama. Later Mrs. Whittenburg moved to Oak Ridge to
work as a shipping and receiving clerk at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, where she
met and later married Lee R. Whittenburg. Together they developed several Oak
Ridge ventures, which included Landmark Finance and Ocean Fresh Seafood. Mrs.
Whittenburg was also involved in her late husband's successful construction and
development company which resulted in her many rental properties. According to
her family, Mrs. Whittenburg was a loving mother and grandmother, who devoted
her life to her family and friends. Mrs. Whittenburg is survived by three
daughters, Pamela Stanner and husband, Barry, Patricia Whittenburg and Paula
Morton and husband, Michael; her only grandchild, Jessica Leigh Yeatman, of Oak
Ridge; her dear sister, Clyde "Honey" Ferrel, of Lenoir City; and by her
brother, Guy Baker and wife, Laura, of Alabama. The family would like to acknowledge
special friends and business associates, Judge Tunnell, Lane Cooper, David
Jones, Claudia and Tom Raudorf, Michael Martin, Juanita Boyd and Barbara Byrge
(health caretaker). The family would like to gratefully thank the doctors and
nurses of the cancer floor of Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. The funeral
will be at 8 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at Weatherford Mortuary with the
Rev. Sherry Dawn Lenderman of New Life Church of the Nazarene officiating. A
graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
Michael Martin, Carl Henline, Phillip Brewer, Gordon Brewer, Tom Raudorf and
Donny Knight will serve as pallbearers. The family requests any memorials be

site at www.cancer.org. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday
at the mortuary.
