Darrel Eugene "Art" Arthur died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Methodist Medical
Center of Oak Ridge, after a courageous struggle with a neuromuscular
disease. Born in Maynard, Iowa, he was the son of Raymond and Leta Silka Arthur, both
now deceased. After graduating from Upper Iowa University, Mr. Arthur spent
two years in the U.S. Army. Early in 1945, he joined the Health Physics
Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. During his years of service at ORNL, his
efforts were to provide radiation exposure control to According to his family,
Mr. Arthur was an avid bowler who bowled 299 in 1950, and a sports enthusiast,
officiating football and basketball in all surrounding counties. He is
survived by his wife of 44 years, Gladys Lewis Arthur; one daughter, Darrah Lou
Hensley of Lexington, Ky., two grandchildren, Todd Arthur Hensley of Tarzana,
Calif., and Robert Scott Hensley of Lexington; one stepdaughter, Linda Sue Ferris
of Blountville; and one stepgranddaughter, Misty Harris, of Chattanooga. He is
also survived by one sister-in-law, Peggy Tuck Arthur, of Lenoir City; and
special friends whom he considered family, Samantha and Chani Dintsch, and Ann
Nissien, of Finland, who was an exchange student at Linda's home for six years.
Mr. Arthur appreciated his flowers while living through the kindness shown to
the family during his long illness, the family said. The funeral will be at 4
p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the
Rev. Dr. Larry Dipboye officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial
Park. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to a
charity of the donor's choice. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m.

Eric H. Denton, 34, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at
Mountainview Hospital in Las Vegas. Born Jan. 21, 1970, in North Platte, Neb., he
was the son of Patricia Ann Purnell Denton of Huntsville, Ala. and James L.
Denton of Oak Ridge. Mr. Denton was a 1988 graduate of Huntsville High School in
Alabama, and a 1994 graduate of the University of North Alabama. He was
preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Sam and Ruby Purnell, and paternal
grandfather, James H. Denton. In addition to his mother and father, he is
survived by his wife, Araceli Pina Denton; three stepdaughters, Deanna, Joanna, and
Jazmyne, all of Las Vegas; his paternal grandmother, Flossie Denton of Oak
Ridge; and his brother, Gregory Allen Denton and his wife, Donna, of Clinton. Mr.
Denton is also survived by two uncles, Ralph Purnell of Las Vegas and Johnny
Purnell and his wife, Connie, of Oak Ridge; his aunt, Sara Cvitan of Cullman,
Ala.; two nieces, Kara and Destiny; and numerous cousins and extended
relatives. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, in the chapel of
Weatherford Mortuary. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at
Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests that any memorials be in the form
of contributions to the donor's favorite charity. The family will receive

Everett John Hoffman, 95, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at
Morning Pointe of Clinton. Born Dec. 31, 1908, in Spring Valley, Minn., he was
the son of John and Alice Halbkat Hoffman. After graduating from Spring Valley
High School, he attended the University of Minnesota and received a bachelor's
degree in chemical engineering in 1931. He then earned a doctorate in physical
chemistry. Dr. Hoffman worked for several years with Armour & Co. in Chicago
as head of Scientific Information. In 1950, he accepted an appointment in the
Scientific and Technical Division of the Atomic Energy Commission, a
predecessor of the Department of Energy, where he remained until his retirement in
December 1977. Since his retirement, Dr. Hoffman was active as a volunteer teacher
of English to international visitors to Oak Ridge. He was an involved member
of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry and on several
committees, most recently on the hospitality committee. During his retirement, and
for several years prior to it, he and his wife traveled extensively to South
America, Asia, Africa and to nearly all the countries of Western Europe. He was
a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and Alpha Chi Sigma
fraternity. At the University of Minnesota, he was elected to two honorary
societies, Phi Lamba Upsilon and Sigma Xi. Dr. Hoffman is survived by his wife of
62 years, Caroline Prizer Hoffman of Clinton; his daughter, Laura A. Hoffman,
of Nashville; and a cousin, John Halbkat of Webster, S.D. A memorial service
will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
with the Rev. Dr. Craig M. Kallio and the Rev. Claire Keene officiating. His
ashes will be interred in the Memorial Gardens of the church. The family will
receive friends in the Parish Hall immediately after the memorial service. The
family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to St. Stephen's

Hedia Sue Murray, 68, of Clinton, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church.
Mrs. Murray was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Arietta Smiddy. She
is survived by her husband of 47 years, Ted Murray; four sons, Gene Edward
Murray and wife, Connie, Jerry Lynn Murray and James Adam Murray, all of Clinton,
and John Paul Murray and wife, Connie, of Maynardville; a daughter, Susan
Phillips and husband, Danny, of Clinton. She is also survived by seven
grandchildren, Joe May, Randy Murray, Ray Phillips, Jeremy Murray, Angela Phillips,
Scarlett Murray and Summer Murray; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Murray and Alexis
Murray; two sisters, Barbara Carden of Lake City and Wanda Hartness of
Clinton; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be at noon Friday,
Oct. 29, 2004, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

Edith Peters, 72, of Harriman, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at home. Born
Oct. 19, 1932, in Union County, she moved to Roane County in 1937. According to
her family, she was a loving, caring mother and grandmother who enjoyed
housekeeping. She was a member of Elverton Baptist Church. Mrs. Peters was preceded
in death by her father, James Hill, and her brother, Hubert Hill. She is
survived by a daughter, Becky Campbell and husband, Bruce, of Harriman; three
sons, Steve Peters and wife, Sheila, and Dennis Peters, all of Harriman and Joe
Peters and wife, Tammy, of Oliver Springs; and her mother, Irene Bailey Hill, of
Harriman. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Randy and Mindy
Campbell, and Wayne, Darren and Candace Peters; three brothers, Walter, James V. and
Kenneth Hill, all of Harriman; six sisters, Gladys Thompson, Opal Sarten,
Lucille Todd, and Mary Lou Miller, all of Harriman, Helen Patterson and Ruth
Letner, both of Smyrna, Ga.; special friend, Linda Crass of Harriman; and several
nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. The funeral will be at 8
p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver
Springs with the Rev. Barry McDonald officiating. A graveside service will be at
11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Clax Gap Cemetery in Harriman. The family
will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Charles Edward Rochelle, 58, of Clinton, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was a member of Clinton First Baptist
Church where he was active with the World Changers Organization and helped
organize the NOAH committee at the church. Mr. Rochelle was active in Clinton
Baseball Inc. and the Anderson County High School Baseball Boosters. Mr. Rochelle
was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his father, A.R.
"Al" Rochelle. He is survived by his wife, Becky Rochelle; three sons, Michael
Rochelle and wife, Lori, Travis Rochelle, and Robert Rochelle, all of Clinton;
his mother, Mary Rochelle of Guthrie, Ky.; a sister, Rita Carmichael and
husband, Jimmy, of Jackson; and two brothers, Al Rochelle and wife, Myrna, of
Guthrie, and Marvin Rochelle and wife, Judy, of Childersburg, Ala. The funeral
will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at Clinton First Baptist Church with the
Rev. Sam Dean officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at
Nickel Cemetery in Centerville.The family requests that any memorials be in the

Eva "Pete" Rose, 84, a lifelong resident of Harriman, died Thursday, Oct. 28,
2004, at the home of her daughter, Brenda Louise Tedder in Harriman. Born
Aug. 6, 1920, in Roane County, she was the daughter of Fred Lee Phillips and
Gertrude Coker Phillips. She was a member of Dyllis Baptist Church and had worked
as a cook at Dyllis Elementary School for seven years. She retired from the
Roane Hosiery Mill after 25 years of service. She was also preceded in death by
her husband, Sam Rose, and three brothers and two sisters, George Phillips,
Jim Phillips, Ray Phillips, Mae Phillips and Lola June Phillips. In addition to
her daughter and son-in-law, Ted Tedder, Mrs. Rose is survived by her son,
David Lee Rose and wife, Brenda Sue, of Oliver Springs; a brother, Fred Phillips
of Dayton, Ohio; and a sister, Leita Jane Phillips of Oliver Springs. She is
also survived by four grandsons, David Tedder, Brad Tedder, Terry Tedder and
Kirk Rose; five great-grandchildren, Ashley Tedder, Cody Tedder, Tyler Tedder,
Sam Tedder and Dillon Tedder; and by a step-great-grandchild, Cameron Brooks. A
graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Dyllis Cemetery
with the Rev. Mack Smith and the Rev. Charlie Dean officiating. The family
requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Dyllis Cemetery
Fund, 530 Dyllis Road, Harriman, TN 37748. The family will receive friends from
1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 31, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.


Coy F. "Roger" Vanover, 63, of Oliver Springs, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004,
at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Sept. 23, 1941, in Pound, Va.,
he moved to Oliver Springs in 1961. Mr. Vanover was a member of Highland View
Church of Christ in Oak Ridge. He had been a 30-year employee of Kroger
working at various locations. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie D. and
Maxie Mullins Vanover. Mr. Vanover is survived by his wife, Loretta Ratliff
Vanover; two daughters, Lesley Hammons and Jennifer Bass and husband, Randy,
all of Oliver Springs; two sons, Paul Vanover and wife, Amanda, and Robert
Vanover and wife, Loretta, all of Oliver Springs; and eight grandchildren, Brandon
Hammons, Dylan Carnes, Derek Vanover, Megan Vanover, Shelby Alexis Bass,
Lauren Bass, Brianna Vanover, and Danielle Vanover. He is also survived by his
brother, Leslie Howard Vanover of Jacksboro; three sisters, Deborah Lynn
Birchfield of Oliver Springs, Geneva Hughes of Lancing, and Sheila Kay Hinson of Rock
Hill, S.C.; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. The
funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at Highland View Church of
Christ in Oak Ridge with Curtis McClain officiating. A graveside service will be
at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 30, at Anderson Memorial Gardens on Oliver Springs
Highway in Clinton. Harold Bibbee, Jack Sebring, Lynn Hart, Norman Allmon, Erb
Mowery and Tommy Leek will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will
receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Sharp Funeral Home of
Oliver Springs in charge of arrangements.

Harry Grinderslv of LaFollette died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at the
University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is

Lois W. Mahoney, 91, of Oliver Springs, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Life
Care of Morgan County. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements,

Steven White, 47, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2004, at St. Mary's
