Merle Clark, 80, a longtime Oak Ridge resident, died in the early morning
hours of Aug. 10, 2005, surrounded by her family. She was born July 12, 1925, in
Etowah, the daughter of W.L. "Bill" and Mary F. Clayton Barnes. She attended
Polk County High School, where she was an avid basketball player in the late
'30s. Merle retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory where she was a secretary
for 20 years in the Biology Division and also in the Fusion Energy Division.
For many years, Merle was a respected leader in the women's golfing community
in Oak Ridge and gave tirelessly to everyone who knew her. She was also the
state champion Senior Female Golfer. Merle was a member of First United
Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, where she elected to have her memorial placed in the
garden among the seeds of life. Merle inspired all who knew her with her
tenacity and willpower for all she encountered in life. In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by one sister and one brother, Elfrieda Robison of
Falls Church, Va., and W.D. "Dennis" Barnes of Benton, Tenn. She is survived by
her husband, Dave; her sons and daughter-in-law, Dean Humphrys, Terry
Humphrys, and David and Josephine Clark, all of Oak Ridge; and her four beloved
grandchildren, Brett Humphrys of Broomfield, Colo., Dean W. Humphrys Jr. of
Richland, Wash., Ashton Clark and Duncan Clark, both of Oak Ridge. She is also
survived by several great-grandchildren. She will also forever be in the hearts of
surviving family made up of her sister, Wynette Barnes Hunt of Oak Ridge; her
brother and sister-in-law, R.H. "Red" and Louise Barnes of Alcoa; her
sister-in-law, Grace Barnes of Benton; and her brother-in-law, Charlie V. Clark and
sister-in-law, Mary T. Jordan, both of Oak Ridge. She is further survived by
nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. A memorial service will be held
at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, in the sanctuary at First United Methodist
Church in Oak Ridge. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be
made to the First United Methodist Church Youth Choir, 1350 Oak Ridge
Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday

Seldon Jasper Cox, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at Blount
Memorial Hospital. Mr. Cox was born Aug. 4, 1925, in Greer, S.C., to Butler B.
and Leona Hughes Cox. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Cox moved to Oak
Ridge in 1960. He was employed at the Y-12 Plant where he was a tool and die
machinist; he retired in 1987. A member of First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge,
he was an active supporter of the First Baptist AGAPE ministry. He enjoyed
listening to big band music and loved spending time with his family. He was
preceded in death by his father, Butler Brown Cox. In addition to his mother, Leona
Cox of Gastonia, N.C., Mr. Cox is survived by his wife, Gloria Elmore Cox of
Oak Ridge; his daughter, Delores Bullock and her husband, John, of Louisville,
Tenn.; his sister, Audrey Rainey and her husband, Julius, of Gastonia, N.C.;
his niece, Susan Adams of Gastonia, N.C.; two nephews, Michael Rainey of
Asheville, N.C., and Bobby Rainey of Greenville, S.C.; and by several great-nieces
and nephews. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, in the
chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Dipboye
officiating. The burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Online messages to the

Tom C. Holsted, 64, of Gallatin, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, after an
eight-year battle with cancer. Born in Manchester, Tenn., Mr. Holsted went on to
serve in the U.S. Army and then spent 40 years in the retail business, living in
such places as Memphis, Miami, Fla., Scottsville, Ky., and Nashville. He
greatly enjoyed music, especially the piano, the guitar, singing and songwriting. In
addition to his impeccable taste in fashion, Mr. Holsted had an incredible
sense of humor that brought pleasure to everyone around him; he was gracious to
many charities and was the "perfect southern gentleman," according to his
family and friends. Mr. Holsted was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence
Cecil Holsted and Ida Mae Reed Holsted, and his brother-in-law, Carl Hicks. He is
survived by his loving wife, Victoria "Vickie" Vaughn Holsted, of Gallatin;
his son, Anthony "Tony" Holsted, and granddaughter, Lynze Holsted, both of
Nixa, Mo.; his sister, Geraldine "Jerri" Hicks of Hilliard, Fla.; his
parents-in-law, Peggy G. Vaughn and Jake R. Vaughn; his sisters-in-law, Valerie Vaughn
Buckler and Elizabeth Vaughn; his brothers-in-law, Wayne Buckler and Steve
Vaughn, all of Birmingham, Ala.; his sister-in-law, Meg Swain, and brother-in-law,
Doug Swain, both of Oxford, Ala.; as well as four nephews and four nieces. Tom
will be greatly missed by both his family and friends, and Tom's family would
like to thank everyone for all the prayers and kindness during his illness. A
memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, in the
chapel of Hendersonville Funeral Home with the Rev. William E. Oaks officiating.
A private burial will follow the service in Hendersonville Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home two hours prior to the service, from
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be
made to Alive Hospice, Inc., 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 37203, or to
the church of your choice. Hendersonville Funeral Home, 353 East Main St. in
Hendersonville, is in charge of arrangements.

Ola Elizabeth Camp Johnson, 81, of Boone, N.C., died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005,
at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was born Aug. 19, 1923, in
Rutherfordton, N.C., the daughter of Robert Carl and Sallie Ann Frady Camp. Mrs.
Johnson was a homemaker and a member of Greenway Baptist Church in Boone. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Hal G. Johnson; and by a brother, John
Nick Camp. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter, Sharron Johnson of Boone;
four sons, Eddie Johnson of Boone, D.H. Johnson and wife, Barbara, of
Kingston, Thurman Johnson and wife, Robin, of Blowing Rock, N.C., and Alton Johnson
and wife, Christina, of Melbourne, Fla.; three granddaughters, Kathryn Johnson
of Coconut Creek, Fla., Hope Johnson of Lorton, Va., and Kerri Hodgson of
Boone; six grandsons, Christopher Johnson and wife, Jennifer, of Livingston, N.J.,
Brian Johnson and wife, Amy, of Albemarle, N.C., Matthew Johnson of Troy,
N.C., Brad Johnson of Kernersville, N.C., Justin Hodgson and wife, Melissa, of
Boone, and Dane Johnson of Blowing Rock; and six great-grandchildren. She is
also survived by two sisters, Ann Frady and Ruth Conner, both of Rutherfordton;
and three sisters-in-law, Madge Phillips and husband, Monk, of Columbus, N.C.,
Dorcus Morrow of Rutherfordton, and Wanda Moose and husband, Hall, of
Taylorsville, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 10
a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at Mount Lawn Mausoleum Chapel in Boone, N.C.,
with the Rev. Tim Smith officiating. The burial will follow in the Mount Lawn
Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greenway
Baptist Church, 880 Greenway Road, Boone, NC 28607, or Watauga Opportunities
Inc., 642 Greenway Road, Boone, NC, 28607. The family will receive friends from
6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Hampton Funeral Service in Boone, N.C.

Helen Silvers died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at NHC Healthcare in Farragut.
