Aloysius (Al) Alphonse Palko, 85, of Burchfield Heights in the Solway
community,

Aloysius (Al) Alphonse Palko, 85, of Burchfield Heights in the Solway
community, passed away at home at 8:40 p.m., Oct. 18, 2005, after a long illness. He
was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oak Ridge, serving as usher for
many years. He was born in Harriman, one of 11 children of the late Andrew and
Julia Palko Sr. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1944-46. He
was a radar lieutenant on the USS Chicago and was stationed in Japan with the
occupational forces. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the
University of Tennessee. He worked for 33 years as a research chemist, first at the
Y-12 plant and then Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Raised on a farm, he never
lost his love of nature. He was landscaper at St. Mary's convent for many years
and worked in the family's Roane County farm and in his home gardens. He built
his home in Burchfield Heights and aided others with woodworking projects. He
was one of the founders of Carbide Camera Club, teaching classes in processing
and developing film. Many local residents own a print of his Old Solway
Bridge photograph. Retiring from ORNL in 1982, he was co-winner of an Industrial
Research and Development Award and an Environmental Protection Agency Award for
an efficient silver recovery process. He had several patents and many articles
in scientific literature. Preceding him in death, besides his parents, are
two sisters, three brothers, a granddaughter and a son-in-law.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Corinne Knight Palko, six children,
16 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Surviving sons and
daughters-in-law are David and Pamela Palko, Bill and Sherry Palko, and Tom and Marie
Palko. Daughters and sons-in-law are Diane and Bill Hatcher, Patti and Rob Drexler
and Elaine Patterson. Surviving siblings are Sr. Mary Martin Palko, Joseph
Palko, Clement Palko, Edward Palko, and Martin Palko and many nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Vermont Avenue
in Oak Ridge on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. with Father Michael
Woods officiating. Burial will follow at the Palko Family Cemetery on Webster
Road in Harriman with family members serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be
at Weatherford Mortuary, 158 South Jefferson Circle in Oak Ridge, Friday, Oct.
21, from 6 to 8 p.m. A Rosary will follow at 8 p.m. An on-line guest book can

Alice C. Asmanes, of Oak Ridge, passed away. Weatherford Mortuary is in
charge of the arrangements, which were incomplete at press time.

William L. Smith, of Clinton, passed away early Wednesday evening, Oct. 19,
2005, at his home. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of the
arrangements, which were incomplete at press time.
