Charles Fugate Eppes Jr., age 94, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. After the outbreak of World War II,
Mr. Eppes registered for the draft, but due to his hearing problems and impaired
eyesight, he was exempt but was listed as "limited service." He was never
called to duty. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority, came to Oak Ridge
in 1943, worked for MSI and continued his work as an accountant with Barber
Buick, Reading Buick, Hoskins Drug Store and Valley Pontiac until he retired on
April 1, 1979. He was a founding member of the '43 Club. After retirement, he
and Helen devoted themselves to traveling and volunteer work in the community.
Mr. Eppes was an avid Tennessee Lady Vols basketball fan and was looking
forward to another outstanding year for the team.



Born in the family home on Luttrell Street in Historic Fourth and Gill area,
Charles attended Old Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee
where he played saxophone in junior high school, high school, university bands
and several jazz bands. During the school year, Charles worked as an orderly at
the Old General Hospital on Riverside Drive and for his father who owned Glen
More Clothing. The day school was out, the Eppes family took the train to
spend their summer at their home in Kinzel Springs (now Townsend, Tenn.). Charles
regularly played saxophone on weekends at the Kinzel Springs Pavilion. They
returned home the week before Labor Day. Mr. Eppes was a devout Christian and
remained active in his church, First Baptist Knoxville, until two weeks before
his death. He was one of the older members of the church having been baptized
when First Baptist Church was located on Gay Street. Mr. Eppes was a member of
the Sons of the Revolution, the Jamestown Society, the Eppes Society, First
Families of Tennessee, and the Welsh Society. He was preceded in death by his
wife of 65 years, Helen Anderson Eppes; parents, Charles Fugate Eppes and Hattie
Roberts Eppes; brother, Clarence Edward Eppes; and sisters, Ethel Eppes
Glenn, Ella Eppes Durham Williams, and Hattie Roberts Eppes Robertson. He is
survived by his daughter, Loucinda Jane Eppes of Knoxville; son, William Llewellyn
Eppes and wife Ann FitzGerald Eppes, of Cary, N.C.; grandchildren, Jennifer
Eppes Baker of Wake Forest, N.C., and William Llewellyn Eppes Jr.;
great-grandchildren, Alyssa Margaret Baker, Benjamin Scott Baker, Bethany Christine Baker,
and Tyler Lee Eppes (born on Charles' birthday March 19); and other nephews and
cousins. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, at
First Baptist Church, Knoxville, with the Rev. William D. Shiell, the Rev. Dave
Ward, the Rev. Jud Reasons, and the Rev. James Evers officiating. Interment
will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: his grandson, William L.
Eppes Jr.; nephews, Mike Cunningham, Jim Durham, R. Kent Farris, MD, William
House Jr., Robert P. Murrian, and Andrew Renfro. Family will receive friends
from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel
in Knoxville.

Patricia Ruth "Pat" Hall, age 59, of Oak Ridge, passed away Monday, Dec. 5,
2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born in Nashville, Tenn., she
was preceded in death by her husband, David M. Hall; mother, Josephine
Criswell, and father, John Criswell. She was a beloved mother and is survived by a
daughter, Sabrina Renee Baird of Hampton, Va.; and a son, John Edward Baird of
LaFollette. She is also survived by her beloved pets, Asta and Sneaky Pie Hall,
and granddogs Punkin, Bear, Katie, and Lando Baird. The family requests any
memorials be in the form of contributions to the Oak Ridge Humane Society, 969

John Harley Hansard, age 84, of Clinton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005,
at Norris Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was a member of Hinds Creek
Baptist Church and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World
War II as a military Policeman. He retired from Martin Marietta after 34
years of service. John was auxiliary chief of police for the city of Clinton, a
security officer for the University of Tennessee, and also served with the
Anderson County Sheriff's Department. John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary
Viola Taylor Hansard; an infant daughter, Violet Jean; his parents, William
and Nancy Collins Hansard; a sister, Mary Hughes; and his brothers, Adrian,
Carson, Raymond, and Cecil Hansard.



Survivors include his son, Ronnie Hansard and wife Anna Lou of Clinton;
daughters, Johnnie Fraker and husband Jackie of Clinton, and Billie Sue Cooper of
Clinton; grandchildren, Regina Patterson, Emma Nuchols and husband Eddie,
Debbie Moore and husband Rodney, Rhonda Williams and husband Mike, Donna
Harrington, Valerie Wilcox and husband Larry, Lisa Raby and husband Ray, Angela Doub and
husband Rodney, Sharon Coleman and husband Pete, Scott Fraker, and Amanda
Chamblee and husband Eric; great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Cailee, Stephanie,
Wesley, Abby, Katie, Travis, Zach, Molly, Kelsey, Aaron, Spencer, Ryan, Kelli,
Raynea, Chad, Tyler, Sarah, Taylor, and Jackson. The family will receive friends
from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with
funeral services following in the chapel. The Rev. Hillard Harless Jr., the Rev.
Kenny Sharp, and the Rev. Ernest Wright will officiate. His burial will be at
11 a.m. Friday at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in
Clinton is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy "Dee" Marian (Hinton) Marland, 87, widow of Kenneth Milton Marland,
of 74 Holly Lane No. 108, Verona, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005. She was
born Oct. 21, 1918, in Illinois, the daughter of Carl Reno and Lillian Marguerite
Propp Hinton. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Marland had been employed by
Staunton Insurance Agency and Rask Florist. She was a volunteer at the King's
Daughters' Thrift Shop. She was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed knitting,
travel, and bingo. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Staunton.
Mrs. Marland was preceded in death by her husband on May 22, 1981. Family
members include a son and daughter-in-law, Gregg H. and Bonnie Marland of Oak
Ridge, Tenn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail M. and Bernard Hogg of Staunton; six
grandchildren, Kyle Hogg and his wife, Lisa; Kelly Hogg and his wife, Heather;
Scott Marland and his wife, Jennifer; Eric Marland and his wife, Kimberly;
Wendy Smock and her husband, Steve; and Cynthia Cuculic; and eight
great-grandchildren, Caleb, Lauren, Gillian, and Calvin Hogg, Connor Marland, Simon and
Levi Marland, and Leah Smock. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Barbara A.
Sawyer. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends in the funeral
home following the memorial service and other times at the home of her
daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Bernard Hogg, 1107 Skymont Road, Staunton.
Memorials may be made to the Augusta County Sheriff's Department, 127 Lee Highway,
Verona, VA 24482, or to the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad Memorial Trust Fund, P.

James M. McVay, age 56, of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at
Blount Memorial Hospital. He was active in fire service for 40 years in the
state of Tennessee. He is preceded in death by his parents, James K. and Jimmie
N. Ray McVay. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Debuty McVay; sister and
brother-in-law, Pamela Gale and Jonathan W. Brown of Memphis; sisters-in-law,
Florence E. Murr of Maryville and Lucille McCall of Maryville; brothers-in-law,
Charles, Jerry, Richard and David Debuty, all of Maryville. Special thanks to
the ORNL Fire Department in Oak Ridge. The funeral service will be held at 8
p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel with the Rev.
Gerald Smelcer officiating. Entombment service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday
at Grandview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m.
Thursday at Miller Funeral Home in Maryville.

Judith "Judy" Ann Meller, 62, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Dec. 3,
2005. We will miss her loving personality and ever-present smile. She was a
former resident of Oak Ridge and was employed at Jefferson Junior High School.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and was active in the youth soccer
association. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Frances
Rasmuson, and a sister Bonnie. She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years,
Alvin Meller; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Jeane Meller of Houston,
Texas, Scott and Angie Meller of Blacksburg, Va., and Steven and Amy Meller of
Hixson, Tenn.; and grandchildren, John, Drew, Michael, Eric, Katie, Hannah,
Thomas, and Maggie. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Darrell
and Phyllis Rasmuson; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Gordon
Anderson, and Sharon and Darrell Paulson; and loving nieces and nephews. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at Trinity Lutheran
Church in Hixson with Pastor R. Chris Hansen officiating. The family will r
eceive friends Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran hurch.

Frances Seroba Skaggs Shifflett, loving wife, mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother and aunt, age 78, of Karns, passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at Fort
Sanders Hospital. She was born in the town of Paragould, Greene County, Ark.,
on Feb. 13, 1927, and graduated in 1943 from Central High School in Cape
Gireadeau, Mo. She was a member of The Church of the Good Samaritan. Mrs. Shifflett
was preceded in death by her parents, Ina Belle and Webster Alexander Skaggs;
a sister, Patricia Ella Snider; and a brother, Kendrick Skaggs. Frances is
survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Alvin D. Shifflett; sons, Robert D.
Shifflett and wife Kimberly of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mark H. Shifflett and wife
Pattricia of Roodhouse, Ill.; daughters, JoAnn Durant and husband Ronald, Janet
L. Conley and husband David of Blue Springs, Mo., Barbara Gail Shifflett and
husband William Harris of Knoxville; grandchildren, Erik E.W. and Sarah Gail
Shifflett, Michael Muntifering, Christopher and Lindsey Durant, Steven Wills and
Daniel Griffith, Morgan and Courtney Conley, Kimberly Oliver, and Madison
Harris; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, James Patrick Snider;
sister-in-law, Kathy Skaggs; nieces and nephews, Mike, Cathy, Steve, Beth Ann, Tom and
Steve; and many special great-nieces and nephews. She will live in the hearts
of her family, friends and Max forever. Family and friends will gather at
Weaver Funeral Home for visitation in honor of Mrs. Shifflett Thursday, Dec. 8,
2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at The Church of the
Good Samaritan at 12:30 p.m. with Father Calhoun officiating, with burial to
follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Weaver Funeral Home in Knoxville is in
charge of arrangements.

Sue Lively Stevens, age 66, of Kingston, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, Dec.
7, 2005, at Jamestowne Assisted Living following an extended illness. She
graduated from Cumberland County High School and attended Roane State Community
College. Sue was owner and director of Momma Sue's Daycare. She was a member of
Morrison Hill Christian Church. She served her community as a Girl Scout
leader, girls' softball coach, and a representative and chairman of the Parks and
Recreation Committee. She also served on the selection committee for Habitat for
Humanity. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Stevens; her
parents, Albert James and Cora Lively; and her brothers, Frank and Joseph "Brownie"
Lively. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Jeff
Peterson of Washington, D.C., Vickie Watson of Kingston, and Katherine and David
Ballard of Cookeville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Cory and Casey Watson of Kingston;
brothers, James Lively of Washington, D.C., Gene "Duck" Lively of Soddy Daisy,
Tenn., and John Lively of Dayton, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. She
will be dearly missed by her many teachers and daycare children whose lives she
touched. The funeral will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, in the
Kyker Chapel with Dennis Mullen officiating. Burial will be in Kingston Memorial
Gardens. A reception will be held at Kingston Community Center from 1:30 until
4 p.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until noon
Saturday at the Kyker Funeral Home in Kingston.
