1960s to the late 1970s. She graduated from King College in Bristol, Tenn., at
the age of 60 with a 4.0 summa cum laude. Survivors include children, Claire
Griffin, Cindy Barnhill, Nancy Rogers, Marsha "Chug" Clouse and Charles Mark

Leta May Burleson, née Warne, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, Jan.
25, 2006, while at the home of her granddaughter with family and friends at her
side. She was born on May 4, 1922, in St. Louis, Mo. to all who knew her, she
was the woman with a story to tell and a smile to share. Lee was preceded in
death by her loving and devoted husband, Donald Burleson; her loving parents,
Ralph and Ivy Warne; and her beloved sister, Patricia Merchant. Lee is
survived by her son, Donald Andrews of McKinnleyville, Calif.; her granddaughter,
Shawn (Harry) Shepherd of O'Fallon, Ill.; her great-grandchildren, Donald, Iva
and Richard, all of O'Fallon, Ill.; her brother, George (Rosemary) Warne of Oak
Ridge, Tenn.; dear friends, Anita Gool, Kitty Acuff, and Heather Cooper and
children; and many nieces and nephews. Lee was a woman of many facets. Being the
eldest of three, she learned to look after everyone and help out in any way
she could. On Sundays, she and her siblings would spend the day with their
mother, Ivy, going from church to church while Ivy played the organ during
services. She graduated from nursing school in Belleville, Ill., but due to an
automobile accident she left the field. She once owned a photography studio in
Belleville as well. She later moved to work as a chemist at Union Carbide in Oak
Ridge, Tenn. She married Don Burleson in 1917 and moved to Mendocino, Calif.,
where she fell in love with the area and its people. She managed Gallery Fair
for several years before she opened her own gallery, Gallery Mendocino. She took
great pride in the gallery, filling it with local artwork of varying styles
and structure. She worked with artists such as Emmy Lou Packard, E. John
Robinson, James Maxwell, and many others. She took as much pride in their works as
she did in her own. She loved to spend her free time making pottery, knitting
blankets for babies, painting replicas of historical homes, or just doodling
little creatures on personal stationary. She received her Realtor's license
while there as well. She was involved in several charitable organizations, freely
volunteering her time and skills. She moved back to Illinois in June of 2003
to be near her granddaughter, Shawn, and her family. She took great pride in
her great-grandchildren and loved spending time with them drawing, reading or
just listening to their tales of the day. Lee was also fond of the afternoons
spent with Shawn shopping, having lunch or planning and making decorations for
family events. She made new friends along the way with her warm smile and her
ability to chat with someone like she had known them forever. She gave her
final art show on Oct. 29, 2004, for her friends and family while living at
Cambridge House. She never met a stranger as they were quickly her friend with whom
she shared a smile and a laugh. She will be missed by all who knew and loved
her. Work Of Art Sometimes, God is quite remarkable, you can see His artistic
talent all around, you can see the majesty in His work, in every being, every
happening, every sound. And at times He excels Himself, and makes a dolphin or
a bird of paradise, or He creates someone with so much love and kindness, that
you'd never meet anyone who's even half as nice. And that's how we think of
Lee, a soul, chock full of warmth, love and spirit, she had a wonderful outlook
on life, love it, live it, but most of all, be in it. The family would like
to thank the staff of Cambridge House and Cedar Ridge Nursing Facility for
their care of Lee when she needed a helping hand. We would also like to thank
Heartland Hospice for their kind words and loving care of Lee and our family when
we needed it most. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to
Alzheimer's. A memorial service will be held at O'Fallon United Church of Christ on Feb.
18, 2006. at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Thierheimer officiating. Upon her
request, her body is to be cremated and her ashes to be scattered over the ocean
along the headlands of Mendocino, Calif., so that she may be reunited with her
husband. Funeral arrangements by Lake View Funeral Home in Fairview Heights,
Ill.
