Here's what I have on your Hackett questions. A lot of this comes from the several articles on the Hackett's from the History of Smith Co. and my exchange of information with other Hackett family connections.

If anyone sees any errors let me know.

Peter Hackett b. February 14, 1786 d. January 06, 1860 married March 12, 1818, Albemarle County, Virginia, to Ann (Annie) Garrett b. April 18, 1789 d. January 02, 1865. They are buried at the Haynie Cemetery, Smith County, Tennessee.



The above Peter is listed in 1850 census of Smith County as Peter Hackett Sr. However In the History of Smith County, (Published 1986) he is listed as Peter Hackett Jr. as his father was also Peter Hackett according to several accounts.



Peter Hackett and Ann Garrett had a son Peter Hackett Jr. (or referred sometimes to as Peter Hackett, Jr. II. b. September 12, 1823 d. September 06, 1909. This Peter Hackett was married 3 times. First wife married on June 22, 1849, Dekalb Co. TN to Sarah Williams b. April 10, 1815 d. January 07, 1861, Second wife married on October 15, 1862, Smith Co. TN to Sarah Elizabeth P. Taylor, Third wife married on December 26, 1878, Smith Co. TN to Celia J. Powell? (not Dowell). I have December 26, 1879 as Celia's death date?



James Marshall Hackett was son of Peter Hackett, Jr. II and his first wife Sarah Williams and was first married to Sarah Graves on October 16, 1878, Smith Co. They must have divorced? as I have Sarah's death as June 17, 1911. They had one son Herman Hackett b. January 12, 1880. The rest of his children were by Mattie Lankford.

Peter Mitchell Hackett b. March 28, 1857 d. February 09, 1916, (son of Peter Hackett, Jr. II & Sarah Williams) married February 03, 1892 to Luvernia Catherine Knight b. January 24, 1869 d. March 14, 1955 (referred to as Mammy Hackett in History of Smith Co.TN). She was daughter of Avery Parham Knight & Catherine Willis and sister of my husbands gr-grandfather Joseph Newton Knight. And yes he was brother of James Marshall Hackett.



Thomas Elijah "Jack" Hackett b. December 18, 1861 d. June 13, 1934 married Fannie Elnora Key b. July 26, 1865 d. October 27, 1952 . This Thomas E. was son of Thomas David Hackett b. February 16, 1831 d. January 15, 1923 married on December 29, 1858 to Martha Susan Haynie b. December 21, 1840 d. July 19, 1898. Thomas David Hackett was son of Peter Hackett and Ann Garrett and brother of Peter Hackett, Jr. II.

In "cleaning up" some of Hackett files today I find I need to
verify some data. Help!

We have a Peter Hackett who married Celia J. Dowell on 26 Dec 1878 in Smith Co., Tn. Also in Smith Co. death records we find Peter Hackett, born in Va, died 5 Sept 1908 at age 85. This would have made him born about 1823. (There is no Jr. attached to this record, only Peter Hackett).

It appears that records verify that both these Peter Hacketts
(one with Jr. attached and one without) are the same individual as born out by tombstone/1880 census both verifying birth 1823.)

We have Peter Hackett Jr. (now the Jr. appears) buried in Smith County Haynie Cem. with these dates 22 Sept 1823 - 9 Sept 1909.

Also Smith Marriage - Peter Hacket (no Jr. listed again)
to Celie Dowell, issue date 25 Dec 1878 and marriage on
26 Dec 1878. (This means Peter married Celie at about
age 55. Also 1880 Smith Census states she is 46, which would make her birth about 1834 and about 11 years younger than Peter.)

(Note James Marshall Hackett-went by name of Marshall- b. 12 Jan 1853-died 9 Jan 1884, was an older son of this Peter & Celia. Md Martha (Mattie) Lankford on 20 Sep 1883 in Smith) Question? If James Marshall did not marry until 1883 why is he not on the 1880 Smith with parents?

Family records state Celia J. Dowell b 8 Aug 1831 in Smith, Tn. and died 9 Jan 1884 in Smith. Question? This same Celia is listed on Pg 165 N/C cemetery as "wife of Peter Hackett and buried in the Hackett Cemetery. Yet pg 112 states Celia is buried in the Haynie Cemetery. Both are the
same Celia as dates are the same in both entries. WHICH CEM. CORRECT?

? Is the Peter Hackett 14 Feb 1786 - 8 Jan 1860 (Haynie Cem., Smith) the father of the Peter Hackett (Jr. or no Jr.)
above of 1823 birth? Peter 1786-1860 had wife Ann________
Hackett 18 Apr 1789 - 2 Jan 1865 and is buried by husband.
Am I correct in that this Ann was his first wife and he had a second wife Sarah______Hackett 10 Apr 1815 - 7 Jan 1861? (I guess the problem again is that on cem. rec. it states Ann, wife of Peter Hackett and Sarah, wife of PETER HACKETT, JR.)

And we have a Peter Hackett who married Elizabeth S. Taylor (cem rec Elizabeth S. Hackett 28 Dec 1827 - 9 Apr 1878 in Taylor Cem, and shown as wife of Peter Hackett).
Smith marriage-Peter Hackett to Elizabeth S. Taylor 15 Oct 1862. Taylor Cem has Elizabeth S. R. (believe should be a T).

And who did the Peter M. Hackett 22 on 1880 cem marry?

Can anyone help me verify all these Peter Hackett and their marriages/parents?

Will share any info I have on Hackett family in Smith.

PS Did Thomas E. Hackett age 16/1880 with Peter & Celia marry Fannie E. Key 26 July 1865 - 27 Oct 1952? And is this the same T. E. Hackett who went by name of Jack?md



Now I have a Mitchell Hackett 28 Nov 1857 - 9 Feb 1916; md to Luervnia_____ who b 24 Jan 1869 d 14 mar 1955. Is this Mitchell a brother of Marshall?
