Thinking about fishing... and camping....
Today was so beautiful ... I wish I had been on a lake drowning a worm...or
mealy bug.....
Many of my favorite memories growing up were of Mom, Dad and me on Ken Lake,
or Lake Cumberland.
Get up in the dark to hit the lake... we would crank up the Coleman and brew
a pot of coffee... fill the thermos and head for the water... listening to
the hum of the outboard motor ... smelling the lake mixed with motor
oil..and earth in the before dawn air....we would fish until 10am or so...
and come back to camp and make a big breakfast... Nothing taste as good as
food cooked at camp.. coffee, fried potatoes, bacon and eggs... sometimes
fried fish for breakfast.... wonderful flavors mixed with the fresh air.
Once in a while, we would fish during the midday... I loved feeling the
boat rock and listening to the water lap, the spin of the reel and plop of
the bait hitting the water... watching it sink until it looses the light.
I remember eating sandwiches and peanut butter crackers in the boat.. and
washing my hands in the lake before eating lunch... of course they were
throughly clean!!! I never got tired of being out on the water.. When the
fishing was slow...... I would quit a while, sketch, read or nap... in the
bow of the boat... I was much smaller and younger then. (I'd hate to try
and nap in the bow of a 16 ft Cherokee now!!! It would take the jaws of
life to get me untangled!!!<LOL>
When we would give it up for the morning we would head to back to camp...
nap .. and hang out till time to go evening fishin... I loved that you could
see swimming fish sometimes by Coleman lantern...
I would get distracted throwing things in the air for the bats to dive
at.... a good use for worms <vbg>
I have never slept better than when we were camping.. I would hit the
sleeping bag while Mom and Dad sat up a while longer... Their conversation
would lull me to sleep...like a lullaby.. we were together... and that said
it all.
Hope this brings back some memories for you all. Share your memory with
us.
