Liz,
I took the marriage date from the DeKalb Co. marriage records online at
Ancestry.com. I have not been able to find when James or Oma died. On the marriage
records they show the names as JAMES ATNIP and OMA RIGSBY married Feb. 1, 1900
which would confirm the 1930 census but the marriage records online also has
the marriage of Enoch Atnip to Sallie Rigsby, Feb. 20, 1890. So really it
looks like Sallie Rigsby and Naomi "Oma" Rigsby are two different women. Is it
possible that James was married to Sallie and she was the mother of the children
and died and he then married Oma who may have been a relative.
I am stumped on this Atnip. I am actually looking for James B. Atnip's who
married Alabama Blankenship in 1882 in White County. The marriage book shows
that James was age 21 (which made him born in 1861) and born in DeKalb County.
He was on the 1860 census with James L. Atnip and then on the 1870 as Buck
Atnip working on a farm in DeKalb Co. I have not found anything on James Buck or
Nancy Alabama since the marriage record. I was hoping that the James who
married Oma in 1900 was the one I am looking for and that Nancy Alabama had died
before 1900. Not having the 1890 census really makes finding this family hard.
Have you by chance seen a death certificate or funeral home record for either
of the sons mentioned? This might be of great help.
At least one good thing came from this query and that is that we found that
Sallie Rigsby and Oma Rigsby are two different women. I will check out the
Atnip mailing list.
Thanks so much for your help,
Pattie
