Subject: [TNWAYNE] Some notes on the Francis Cypert II Family of Wayne Co. TN
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2007 18:33:22 -0600

This is a repert generated from my database on the children and
grandchlldren of Francis Cypert II (ca. 1750-1839) and Abigail Johnson

information, some of it is still unproven and may now have been superceded
by later research (hopefully well documented and not just off the internet).
I post it here for anyone to use so long as they give their sources.

"History of Arkansas", page 207

Chapter headed "The First Sharecroppers"

"Among the thirty members who were "scalawags" -- native sons who had gone
over

to the radicals -- there was no one particularly prominent; but the
"Conservatives" had

succeeded in elected about a dozen, their chief man being J. N. Cypert, a
slight, frail-

looking individual with an unruly shock of black hair and beard and the
remote and

dreamy eyes of a frontiersman. He was from White County, fifty miles
northeast of

Little Rock, where the pretty little town of searcy still lies, just at the
point where the flat

-bottom loawlands are first cut into by the rocky, flat topped Ozark ridges.
Cypert

managed to obtain the chairmanship of the unimportant committee on revising
the

journal, and from that obscure post aided mightily in impeding the
convention's

progress. Cypert had actually been a member of the secession convention in
1861;

and he had also served a major in the Confederate Army; but was now believed
to be

Unionist by all his neighbors, and so had had no difficulty in registering
and being

elected as delegate to the convention.

"Six days after it met, Cypert arose and moved that the Constitution of 1864
be

readopted. This was the very Constitution that Lincoln himself had
presumably already

accepted; under it, althought the Negro had full property rights, he was not
given the

franchise, nor did it disfranchise any white citizens. ..."

Judge of the Circuit Court for the district serving White County, Arkansas.

46 F x. Martha CYPERT .

47 M xi. James William CYPERT was born about 1829 in Wayne County,
Tennessee.

James married Mary Jane HENRY about 1848 in Tennessee. Mary was born about
1831 in Tennessee.

6. Thomas CYPERT (Francis) was born in 1795/1796 in North Carolina. He died
in Oct 1842 in Daphne, Baldwin, Al.

Thomas married Mary UNKNOWN . Mary died on 4 Jun 1844 in Daphne, Baldwin,
Alabama.

They had the following children:

48 M i. Thomas CYPERT was born about 1831 in Daphne, Baldwin, Alabama.

Information from Doris McGill Watt who had some of the information from
Harley

Flowers.

"James E. Cypert, son of Thomas Jr. and Margaret Litchfield, raised the sons
of his

brother, William T. who died 1911; the boys' mother died about the same
time. Sons of

Wm. T. were named Hermos, Edmond and Charles. Charles died before James E.

Cypert's death in 1931; obituary in "Pensacola Journal". March 6, 1931, page
3,

mentions two nephews surviving. Hermos and Edmond were grown by 1931. Hermos

lived in South Carolina; Edmond married Eulah (Hall?) of Bay County,
Florida.

Edmond worked for International paper Cop and was transferred occasionally.
Their

son Jim came along while in Idaho.

Eula and Ed Cypert were dear friends of Bertha and Oscar McFill (who was

also a cousin, of course). Eulah and Ed both died in Mobile during the
1970's. Son,

Jim, and wife, Frances, nee Wallace, live in Mobile (1988). And they have
children.

Mary Etta McGill Skipper supplied the information about James E. Cypert

caring for his nephews and that he was employed with Florida's St. Andrews
Bay

Lumber Company at the time of his death, having been hired by his cousin,
Frank

Cypert McGill (father of Oscar above).

Thomas married Margaret LITCHFIELD on 8 Aug 1862 in Mobile, Mobile, Alabama.
Margaret was born about 1844 in Livingston, Sumpter County, Alabama.

49 F ii. Elizabella CYPERT was born in 1830 in Baldwin County, Alabama.

Elizabella is listed as a daughter of Thomas in the letter from Judge Jesse

Newton Cypert to Jesse Bundy Cypert in 1907. Judge Cypert stated that

Elizabella had married Hartwell Cole. It is not known if Alfred Bennett Cole
is

Elizabella's son, but he is documented as Hartwell's son. See notes on
Hartwell

Cole.

Elizabella married Hartwell COLE son of Bennett COLE and Nancy KIRWIN about
1854 in Wayne County, Tennessee. Hartwell was born in 1831 in Wayne County,
Tennessee. He died in Jan 1857 in Wayne County, Tennessee. He was buried in
Bennett Cole Cemetery, Wayne County, Tennessee.

Child is documented as son of Hartwell Cole from the Chancery Court Case

Andrew J. Cole vs J. H. Cole, et al, 18 March 1867, Box C, Folder 8. Case
No.

42 Wayne County, Tennessee

50 F iii. Margaret CYPERT was born in 1845 in Baldwin County, Alabama.

Margaret married Harrison H. COLE son of Bennett COLE and Nancy KIRWIN about
1861 in Wayne County, Tennessee. Harrison was born in 1841 in Wayne County,
Tennessee.

It is not known when Harrison married Eliza Johnson, so the mother of only
the first

four children is definitely known to be Margaret.

According to the 1910 Izard Co., AR census Eliza Margritta Cole was still
living, age

64, born TN widow. If her name was Eliza Margaret then the whole connection
to

Margaret Cypert may be completely wrong.

7. Francis CYPERT , III (Francis) was born in 1795/1796 in North Carolina.
He died on 14 Aug 1874 in , Commanche, TX.

The following was written by Doris McGill Warr in 1986.

"The following has been compiled mostly from "Southern Kinsmen" by Mrs.
Grace Morrow Bryan.

Her 400+ page book was published in 1977 by Polyanthos Press, New Orleans.
Mrs. Bryan, a retired

educator, lives in St. Joseph, Tenn. As a trained historian adn researcher,
she worked with early ship

passenger lists, census and other federal records, State, County, Church
(particularly Quaker records of

Pennsylvania and North Carolina), land and military records -- all sources
for exciting information about

our ancestry. Many relatives contributed Bible listings, personal accounts,
lengthy genealogies and of

course interesting legends for inclusion in her fine book. The books stops
short of our branch which

descends from Francis Cypert, III. His children, with the exception of his
first daughter, Amanda Cypert,

migrated to Comanche and Hill Counties in Texas during the latter 1870s.

"We know that Amanda Cypert McGill's sister, Louisa ("Vick") Cypert Forehand
and a brother

named Luther (although he is not listed by that name in the following
outline) came from Texas to visit in

South Alabama in the 1930's. My Aunt Mary McGill Skipper of Panama City,
Florida, recalls the

occasion, as may others of her generation. My contact with cousin Walter
Cypert of Throckmorton,

Texas and his Christmas '85 visit with me, has prompted me to share
information acquired from his

research and my own diggings. First and foremost, we appreciate Mrs. Bryan's
book for energizing

Walter Cypert and me to this point. And I thank Walter Cypert also for
lending me his Xerox copy of her

book long enough to make another Xerox copy, as the properly published
edition is out of print.

Hopefully, you will find our gathers, condensed though they may be here,
interesting enough to

stimulate you and your family into additional research -- and sharing.

"Aunt Mary McGill Skipper recalls that her Grandmother, Amanda Cypert McGill
said the Dutch

language was much used during her growing-up years in Daphne, Alabama.
Author Bryan's many

sources indicate that the Scypeart, Sipert, Cipert, Cypert and Cypret (some
of the various spellings)

family came from the Alsace-Loraine section of Germany. Alsace-Loraine is a
large geographical area

also in France. In the United states we have large areas extending into
several states, i.e. the

Mississippi Delta, the Ohio Valley, etc. But to return to understanding the
use of the Dutch language in

Daphne, we should be reminded that Dutch-Deutsch is German language, a
popularized form between

High and Low German language. Our own English is derived from the German
language, as are the

tongues of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland. Francis Cypert III and his
twin brother Thomas of

Daphne, Baldwin County, Alabama, shared with us their own American
pre-Revolutionary War ancestry

steeped in Pennsylvania Dutch culture and traditions of the Can Creek Quaker
Meeting House in

Alamance County, North Carolina."

"Francis III owned 1&1/12 sections of land in Daphne, east of Hey 98.
Thomas, the twin, owned

much land on Mobile Bay at Daphne and Montrose (then known as Sibley City)
and operated the

original Belrose Hotel in Daphne on the Bay. The hotel and his other
properties were sold after his

(Thomas) death in 1842. Francis became executor. Thomas' widow, Mary,
protested the sale. Medrick

D'Olive was guadian for child, Margaret.

"Frank and Nancy Cypert raised a large family in Daphne before moving to
Comanche Co.,

Texas in the mid-1870's. Legend that they loaded up on wagon and headed west
after somebody went

bad on a bond Frank III had posted, leaving them embarrassed and perhaps
less rich, is attrributed to

Jennings McKenzie of Robertsdale. Cousin Edith Parker Wynn interviewed him
extensively last year

[1985].

Walter Cypert of Throckmorton, Texas, says his grandfather Thomas Franklin
Cypert (listed

before) told him that Frank III was a timber man and had a sawmill in
Daphne. Frank II was a farmer as

well."

Doris McGill Watt: "Frank Cypert III signed a petition in 1821 of West
Florida residents requesting

annexation to Alabama. Source: Territorial Papers of Florida.
