It's funny y'all are talking about this because I had about the same
conversation with a friend just about an hour ago. Her great-great-great grandmother
was black. Her great-aunt was told she had Indian blood. The friend
mentioned she may have been told this because of the segregation issue. She did
mention that according to the census, if someone had any black background at all
they were listed as black regardless of what their skin color looked like. So
that is something to keep in mind when doing census record research. :)
