It is not always true that people of color were listed as such. Marcus
Winchester, a founder of Memphis, Tennessee, married an octoroon woman from St.
Louis. This was well known in the 1830s in Memphis. This woman died in New
Orleans (where they kept death records) in 1838 and she is listed with a "C"
for colored. Their children and grandchildren, etc. were all listed as white
on census records. In "Tennessee and Tennesseans" it was said that Marcus
Winchester expressed his concern over their "copper" tinge.
I offer no explanations. I have seen the records and that is just the fact
of the matter.
