Payne, Ota OBrien
Southern Standard McMinnville,TN Apr. 11, 1952 pg 17
Campaign Community--- Campaign Church of Christ was the scene Sunday
afternoon of the funeral of our veteran merchant, church leader, and highly
respected citizen, O. B. Payne, who passed away at his home here on Friday
p.m., after a year of illness caused by a bad heart condition. Mr. Payne
was 86 years of age, born in Kentucky in 1865, but spent the most of his
life in Tennessee. He worked in the insurance business several years, but
located at Bone Cave over thirty years ago and went into the mercantile
business, moving here in the year of 1924 and continuing the same business
. A few years after locating her he lost his home and store by fire. He
rebuilt and went on until he thought best to go out of business and locate
in Chattanooga with his children. He did not tarry with them long as
Campaign and his former business beckoned and he returned to continue in
business until the day of his death. He was known in the business world as
O. B. Payne, to his friends as Odie, but hiss real name was Ota OBrien
Payne. Fifty-six years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Hallie Locke
at the Locke home on Mountain Creek near Gath. To this union four children
were born, two of whom survive, T. H. Payne and Mrs. George Christenbury,
both of Atlanta, Ga. Two more dutiful children to their parents never lived
and their mother, who is very badly crippled from arthritis will never want
for the lack of care. A large crowd heard Bro. Phy of the Central Church
in town pay a fitting tribute to our neighbor and many went on to the
Fuston Cemetery at Gath for the interment. Our sympathy to Mrs. Payne,
Thruman and Thelma and the grandchildren.
