Hi,

This is only a guess. I suppose it would matter where the grave was
(what state). In the South, I would GUESS that the man would be buried
on the north side (and the woman on the south side) as a symbolic
representation that the man was protecting the woman from the north
(i.e. post civil war). Again, this is merely a guess????
