LUIS O. TORRES of El Salto died Monday. He is the son of Onecimo V. and Ana M. Torres and continued in the tradition of ranching and being a land steward. He raised sheep, cattle and an array of exotic animals in El Salto. His most recent efforts were to restore and preserve his agricultural roots and way of life through a living and working ranch and museum. He and his wife's efforts were recognized by the state of New Mexico by listing the ranch and Luis' birth home, Hacienda de los Torres Historic Preservation District, in the New Mexico Historic Register. He was also recognized by the State Bridge Engineer for his design and construction of New Mexico's first and only covered bridge, which can be visited on his ranch. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Donaciano, Premativo and Ricardo Torres. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Torres; sons, Lt. Col. David A. Torres (Kris) of Alabama, Joseph Torres (Fran) of El Salto, and Dr. Robert Torres (Sara) of Missouri; five!
grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, Fermin Torres (Irene), Cresilda Vigil, Casilda Medina (Jessie), Marina Archuleta (Jose Manuel), Esequiel Torres (Felicia), Martin Torres (Elma), Juan Torres (Claudina), Louie Tafoya, Benjie Tafoya (Yvette), Frances Tafoya, Bonnie Mares (Clarence), Eralia Torres, Carolina Torres and Marcella Rodriguez. Funeral mass will be held today at Holy Trinity Church in Arroyo Seco. Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home.
