How so, Rondina? Both are open to the public and permanently archived, so
that current clients and future clients can read everything we've said and
every question we've asked, to form their judgments of our work. What's
more, opposing genealogists in court cases do the same, to find "weaknesses"

that the opposition has demonstrated or "admitted to," in order to challenge
the opposition's qualifications. The only "safe" place to post a question,
from those standpoints, would be a closed list that is not permanently
archived--an option this forum did not choose.

Curiously,
Elizabeth

Elizabeth,
While what you say is true, it is based on the mechanics of mail-lists.
My opinion is based on the type of questions asked and how they are answered.
I feel that people are more comfortable asking some of their basic
questions on the transitional list versus the APG list. The APG list, which I
regularly post to, can become quite political. I haven't seen an agenda, aside
from the dispersal of educational information of all types, materialize on the
transitional list. This may be, at least in part, because the transitional
list is not attached to an organization.
I have noticed another difference. When someone posts a question to the
transitional list, responders seem to be reading the posts more carefully.
There is a tendency on the APG list, I believe because there are so many posts
on most days, to glance over a post without seeing what the real question is.
It is a common complaint that the "real" question does not get answered. I
don't see this happening on the transitional list so far.
The "atmosphere" of the transitional list seems to me to be more relaxed.
