Melanie,

I am a subscribed watcher of this list. I am a family
hobbyist/researcher so am not involved in genealogy as a business. I
can't offer you website business advice but having created many
websites, I can offer some website advice.

Use a site tool such as Google Analytics, I am sure there are other
comparable applications, to monitor the traffic on your site. It will
give you valuable info you can get no other way. Here is a brief list of
possible info to be gained.

* how many unique visitors to your site
* where they are coming from
* the path they take through your site
* the pages they enter and leave by
* how long they are on your site or a particular page
* their browser and operating sytem
* plus more

If you opt to use Google Analytics, this link offers a free 7-day intro
course. Of course, they offer courses for pay as well. I am just now
learning how to use it to revamp my sites in response to my site's
viewing patterns. I was surprised to learn that some of our visitors
were leaving before they ever found certain pages which I wanted them to
find.

On more aspect of your website to consider down the road is validating
your site. Someday as the browsers become more standards compliant,
parts of your site may break. That is an important aspect of being a web
master. Not only to make it look good but to function from the code up.
Become a knowledgable webmaster, not just a site designer. In the end
you have to know, to some degree, how to fix it.

I ran a quick validation on it and it failed as xhtml 1.0 transitional.
You may want to change your doctype as html transitional and work up
from there. I am sure I gave you more info that you wanted to hear and
some your probably already know. Good luck on your site. If I can be of
help, please contact me.

Lorrie
