I'm another newbie, but I only joined the list recently. Michele, I'm
pretty much in your shoes right now with hopes of going to Samford this
summer as well. I'm on the waiting list for the ProGen group after yours.
I'd like to piggy back on to your question and ask, at what point do you
start taking on clients? Before you are certified? Only after? I know it
will be a while for me, as the more I learn, the more I realize I need to
learn. Hope to run into some of you at FGS.

Subject: [TGF] A newbie - a most basic question
Hello, everyone.
My name is Michele Kemper. I have been a member of the mailing list for a
couple of months, mainly going through the archives and trying to learn from
the many discussions going on.
I am currently in the beginning part of my transition to becoming a
professional genealogist. I have identified that my education and experience
levels need to improve. I attended the NGS conference in Raleigh this past
May. I am part of the next ProGen group getting started and I hope to attend
at Samford next June. I am getting involved with local genealogy societies
as well. Hopefully, if my research comes together, my goal after attending
Samford is to put together my application portfolio for BCG certification. I
am focusing on completing my transition to becoming a full-time professional
genealogist within the next 18-24 months.
I have a most basic question and it may have already been discussed, but I
have not had a chance to go through all of the archived messages.
My question is: For those that have completed or are almost through their
transition, how did you do it? Specifically, how did you balance taking on
genealogy projects for clients while also working in another job/profession
full time?
I am working a full-time 40+ hour a week job that takes up alot of my
daylight hours, thus taking up alot of hours that I could be spending in
courthouses, libraries and archives. I can do alot of research online, but
there is nothing that can replace the hands-on that is needed for many
genealogy problems.
Thank you all for your help and inspiration,
Michele Kemper
