Thanks for asking this question; I have thoroughly enjoyed all the
responses (and have drafted a compilation-type-article if anyone
wants to see it).

While not a history major, I grew up with a fondness for historical
novels, so I am strongly attracted to understanding the historical
context surrounding our ancestors. I got completely caught up in such
a story while researching my husband's BARBER ancestors. The result
was a long article that I've found no place to publish, so I
"published" it myself. Maybe it will become a historical novel some
day, but until then, I think it's one example (albeit long) that you
might consider.

It also raises a related question for me that I will post under a
separate topic.
