I have the guest book from my grandfather's funeral in 1944. He resided in a small rural area in Missouri, and the book was obviously printed for funeral purposes, so we can date the practice to at least that time. I also assume that since my father gave the book to me, the guest book was given to the family as it is now.

I also have several 1930s obituaries from the same area, and it seemed to be common practice to name the "out of town" guests. A few miles down the road tended to qualify as "out of town."
