Had to laugh!

ESM wrote " what is the advantage to using an abbreviation in the first
place?" The abbreviation under discussion was "d.y." for "died young," which
I had not seen yet. The only advantage I could see would be in a table with
a too-narrow fixed width column, but that seemed so unlikely I didn't post.

Well, this morning -- as usually happens when you "never" see an
abbreviation, I saw "Dy." Different punctuation and context, and I had
never (really!) seen this one before either. It means "deputy," as in
"deputy editor."

So, live and learn! I've lived on this earth all this time with no
knowledge of "dy" (only DIY!), and here we have two instances in less than a
week.

Have a nice dy! :)

find a discussion of "died young" and its abbreviation "d.y." Even last

Ida, what is the advantage to using an abbreviation in the first place? Why
would anyone want to use an abbreviation that would confuse most people
today--not to mention future generations as well--just to save 5 keystrokes?
