Permit me to disagree. Citing the repository tells anyone following
your research exactly where the item was found, and I do think it is
important in cases such as the one I cited regarding the very different
editions of the 1935 and 1945 Florida state censuses. Merely citing the
edition in this case is, I feel, insufficient. For one thing, in this
particular case, citing the edition alone does not address the fact that
the microfilms of the 1935 census at the Alachua County library and the
ones at the Jacksonville library do not have the same counties on the
same roll numbers. Citing the repository allows other researchers to go
right to the exact document in the exact form used by the original
researcher. That way, nobody has to spin their wheels (or reinvent
one), essentially doing a new search for the same data which appears in
a somewhat different form.
