Thank you so much for your help!
I'm working on the final assignment in the NGS Home Study Course, which has me writing a biography of my ancestor Lemuel H. Nightingale, who was a ship's master in Rockport; he lived in Rockport from about 1850 till his death in 1887. I'm interested in reading the local papers to learn what was going on in his world, so there isn't a particular look-up I need--rather, I want to browse the headlines. (It's fascinating what I've picked up from the earlier Gloucester papers, and am hoping I can do the same for Lemuel's period of residence.)
Nancy: I didn't know about those external databases on NEHGS--thanks!
Kay

Hello Kay,
I do a lot of lookups at the BPL (Boston Public Library) for many historical newspapers -- [unfortunately,] onsite lookups are still the only way to access the many newspapers that aren't yet online. (We've gotten really spoiled because so many are available online now, but just awhile ago, having someone local do lookups was the only way to get access to _any_ old newspapers.) If it doesn't entail significant research time, it's still possible to do it the old-fashioned way and send a query request for a search to the repository -- either the BPL or the Gloucester County Library System (Gloucester County Library System's Reference Department : 856-223-6050 or ).
You don't say just when "in the mid-19th century" that your person lived, but on genealogybank.com the Gloucester Democrat is available 8/19/1834 – 2/16/1838 and the Gloucester Telegraph 1/1/1827 – 12/31/1851; Gloucester is the "major" town just next door to Rockport. In any case, you probably want to be checking the Gloucester papers.
Good luck,
--Meredith

Kay,
You might consider contacting the local library with a specific request. I'm currently researching a branch of my family from North Dakota. I live in Connecticut. I was thrilled to discover that they will scan copies of obituaries upon request.

Katherine,
Have you tried 19th Century Newspapers? I access it via my Mid-Continent
Public Library subscription, but I see that it's also accessible through
the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS).
