LINDA STARR WRITES:
So which two (William Traylors) served in the 5th Rgmt VA Continental
line? And are we "sure" the elder William Sr. didn't die at the payroll
reports say?
CAL ANSWERS, RE WILLIAMM SR
There was never any question in my mind that the payroll reporting "dead"
was in error. Note that the entry was made on 1 APRIL. (1777? I am
working out of my head, no files here in front of me.) It was planting
time to be home, and the term of service was near an end.
WILLIAM JR spent the spring "in hospital, Trenton." That was Trenton, NJ.
The hospital building yet stands in the center of town, near the river,
and is a park. It is made of stone, must have been a mill or other
commercial building before the war.
The two Williams fled the war zone for SC (GA?), as I recall, with about
ten TRAYLOR families. Then, after the war some of them returned to VA,
some stayed and begot.
All of this from my head, my files are at the cabin.

==the "Jr"? William of GA did get a headright in GA, but that doesn't
necessarily mean he served in the RW -- at least that's the way I'm
reading the grant to my Henry Starr I'm currently working with.
RW privates got 287 1/2 acres of land; his land grant warrant was for 200
acres.
CAL REPLIES:
After the war, the soldiers and patriots of the Revolution had difficulty
proving and collecting any remuneration from their new government. The
new government was poor, and very stingy. There are several records in
our TRAYLOR files about "patriots" who were not reimbursed. The
Continental Army had to feed and outfit themselves as they moved, each
man on his own witss, and the soldiers gave chits to the local people
from whom they in effect confiscated these supplies. These locals became
"patriots," often involuntarily. After the war, the chits often were not
honored.
LINDA WRITES:
And Marie, I'm not sure the William b. c1733 is the same William as mine
who d.1791 -- just call me the eternal skeptic.
