Mike,
Your question assumes that using the word 'Germany' would coincide with the establishment of a political entity. Not so. The word use -and 'Germany' is an English word by the way- comes as a result of international trade negotiations, consideration (on the part of the manufacturer), or treaty.

I would suspect that the name 'Germany' on the pottery betrays a relatively recent date for the pottery. Perhaps even as recent as the 1950s or 1960s. (I am not an appraiser of art or antiques, certainly not of items unseen.)

A state of Deutschland can be seen as a historical progress of two periods:

1871-1945 a unified German Empire, including for a period what A.Hitler proclaimed as the Third Reich (Empire) - der dritte Reich (1939-1945) in a reference to the Holy Roman Empire (the 2nd), and (the first) Roman Empire

1949 to present the Federal Republic of Germany - Bundesrepublik Deutschland and a so-called government in parallel, the German Democratic Republic - Deutsche Demokratische Republik (1949 through 1990).

Prior to 1871 several other countries controlled parts of what is now Germany and simultaneously several cities exerted independent control of their regions in an interlocking solidarity known as the Hanseatic League.

I have my grandfather's shaving-soap mug, and it has 'Germany' printed on
the bottom. Does anyone know when Germany became a political entity that
would be identified as the country of origin on pottery?

Thanks
