Someone asked for this one--Jens Rye, born near Bergen in 1835. He served in
the Norwegian Navy, and then came to America--first to Wisconsin. He came to
Dakota in 1868 and homesteaded one mile east of Gayville. He loved South
Dakota and died here in 1922.
Son, Lincoln Rye was born in Gayville in 1884.He is buried in Gayville
Cemetery, also.
This may be forwarded to other Lists, as someone out there is looking for it

There is a town out of Yankton just filled with Norwegians and the
countryside has a dozen or so Norwegian Lutheran Churches, three started as
Trondheim Lutheran.
The name of the town was VOLIN and I assumed that it was solid Norwegian.
Well, Joe Volin was born in Montreal, Canada in 1838. He came to Dakota with
parents,
Charles and Marie (Bernier) Volin in 1848. Joe filed a claim on the historic
James
River. He freighted from that claim before filing. He married Amanda Taylor
in 1966. Can anyone tell me more about the Norwegian Volin Family, or was the
village named for Joseph and his family?

Do you remember old Ole L.Dahl, who wrote articles for the farm magazines,
entitled
"News from the Banana Belt" in the weekly Plain TAlk? He had a keen sense of
humor and knowledge was a joy to those around him. He married Tina Fosse in
1918, and lived in Meckling, where he died in 1943 and is buried there. He
was the nephew of Ole Jetley and Bertha Botolfson and spent much of his life
in their home.
He could tell "tall tales" and Tina coaxed the neices and nephews to come
with her fried chicken. They had no children of their own.

Who remembers Jens Erickson 1850 and his spouse Anna Brunick 1857, both born
in Norway? They lived in NOrway Township, but had to move because the
beautiful Missouri River was cutting away their land. I just wonder what Jens
and Anna would say crossing the new Bridge just opened from Vermillion into
Nebraska? With the tree full of fall decor, it is a sight to behold.

The End. : )
