Cousins,
Here is a summary of what we now think we know about Abraham Tuckness or
Tuckniss written by Cliff in England. We are still not sure who his parents
were so if you have any information to add, PLEASE do. Thanks.
Tentative Summary
Abraham Tuckness b. ca 1765 (note this date is just a guess based on the
available data) was a Quaker like his parents, but was "disowned for
associating to learn the art of war" in 28 Dec 1787 at the Philadelphia
Monthly Meeting. He was in Demerara by 1790 where his brother John died in
1815. His sister, Ann (Tuckness) Hopkins also visited Demerara after her
husband, William, died in 1814.
William and Ann (Tuckness) Hopkins' son, Robert b. ca 1796, married Mary
Carbery b. 1809 in Demerara, West Indies. Her parents, William Carbery and
Sarah Richards, were both born in Barbados.
Abraham Tuckness b. ca 1765 married Frances Reading on 12 Apr 1796 in
Demerara. Her father was probably William Reading who died in 1774 in
Essequebo, West Indies. Frances (Reading) Tuckness died in 1848 in
Easingwold, North Yorkshire, UK. Her sister, Mary (Reading) Austin, died ca
1853 Stratford, Connecticut and her sister, Anne (Reading) Greene died 25
Oct 1786 in Demerara.
Suspicion is that Abraham died before 1840 - and possibly as early as 1816
Frances Tuckness left Guiana in 1816 - apparently on her own
Only Frances is referred to in her son's will of 1840
Frances is living on her own according to the 1841 census (unfortunately the
1841 does not give martial status)

I have old letters dating 1785 written from Philadelphia by Abraham
Tuckniss. In them, he mentions Aunt Betsey and Old Mr. Morris who is in
failing health. He also mentions a "Lydia".
1787
"disowned for associating to learn the art of war" in 28 Dec 1787 at the

I have an old letter dated 1790 from Demerara. It was written by Abraham
Tuckniss, who , I think , was brother to my 3great grandmother. My 2 great
grandfather travelled down there and lived there for awhile. His name was
Robert Hopkins and he married a girl who had been born there- Mary Carbery.
Her father , William Carbery and her mother Sarah Richards Carbery , were
from Barbados. I know Abrahma Tuckniss was a Quaker who disassociated. I
would like to find records of Abraham's dather, marriage, etc. I would like
to find reocrds of Mary Carbery's birht in 1809 or of her brothers: Edward,
John, Joseph, and Richards. I think thye might have worked for the West
Inides Co. I think Hopkins might ahve been into ship building. I do not know
who to contact to aide me in my research.--evh
