Hi Cousins and welcome back to Luke,
I've saved the best for last, but don't peak. I've been looking at the 1860 - 1880 for Tuckness connections and found one that I had not seen before: In the 1880 Fed Census in Panola Co, MS a Sarah E. Tuckness b. ca 1819 in NC is listed as the Mother-in-Law of Robert P. Smith b. ca 1847 in MS. His wife (and Sarah E.'s daughter) was also listed......Mattie E. (Tuckness) b. in TN. Robert and Mattie's two children were also listed: Robert E. age 4 and Conrad E. age 2. Both were born in MS.
So, who is this Sarah E. and what Tuckness born around 1815-1820 was she married to? It was a bit hard to find since I did not know her maiden name, but I did know that her daughter was an M. E. Tuckness that married a Robert P. Smith. It took awhile, but there it was. Mary E. Tuckness b. 10 Dec 1843 in Mason, Tipton Co, TN married Robert Palmer Smith 2 Mar 1875 in Charleston, Tallahatchie Co, MS. I found that in an email from "The Quince" on 19 Aug 2000.
Mary E. (Mittie) was the dau of Thomas Jefferson Tuckness b. 1819 in Maury Co, TN and Sarah E. (Sallie) Hilliard b. ca 1819 in Giles Co, NC. She married T. J. Tuckness on 15 Nov 1840. Sarah E. Hillard's parents were Epps Hilliard and Sallie Lewis born born in NC. I found that in an email from Gail (GENENUT) on 23 Jan 2000: 3. Book, Century Review of Maury County, pub. 1907 which states: "A.T. Hilliard came to Maury Co. in 1831. A.T. Hilliard married Laura, dau. of T. J. [Thomas Jefferson] Tucknis, of Fayette Co. Mr. Tucknis was born near Mt. Pleasant, 1819, and married Sallie, dau. of Epps and Sallie {Lewis} Hilliard, of N. C. She is still in good health."
T.J. and Sarah's children that I have listed are:
Louiza (Loura) F. Tuckness b. ca 1841 in TN
Virginia (Jinnie) B. Tuckness b. ca 1842 in TN
Mary Elizabeth (Mitte) Tuckness b. 10 Dec 1843 in Mason, Tipton Co, TN d. 19 Dec 1894 in Williamson Co, TN
Laury H. Tuckness b. ca 1849 in Mason, Tipton Co, TN
I'm not sure how A.T. Hilliard that married T.J. and Sarah's dau, Loura is related to Sarah E. (Hilliard) Tuckness, but there must be a relationship. Interestingly enough in the IGI I also found that an A.T. Hilliard married Virginia (Jennie) B. Tuckness in Maury Co. So that may have been a second marriage.
Thanks to Gail, we also know that Thomas Jefferson Tuckness served in the Civil War in the Confederate Cavalry (16th or 18th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Logwood's) Company J. So, where was T. J. in the 1880 census? Why was he not with his wife, Sarah E. (Hilliard)? No, he was not dead. He is listed back in Tipton Co, TN in the 1880 Fed Census. He is listed as married, but his wife is not listed. Of course no, she was with her daughter in Panola Co, MS. T. J. is listed with the occupation: "Tay". Anyone have any idea what that might be? Listed with T. J. are: J. J. Sommerville and W. A. Sommerville who appear to be farm hands.
OK, now for the best part. In the 1880 Census, T. J. indicates that his father was born in Pennsylvania.......yes, Pennsylvania!!! His mother is listed as being born in Kentucky. Who are his parents?
We now have proof that the TN Tuckness line is connected to the PA Tuckness line, but we still need to find T. J.'s parents. Any theories?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Jerry
