Colleen: I'm thinking you may learn his parent's name in either of these
ways:

1. An 1870 census film of McMinn Co., TN, looking for him IN the family
group, with his father listed as head of the household, or

2. Thru a Soundex film of the same county, looking for the same as in #1.

3. Since he died in 1940, he MAY have had a Social Security card. Go to
the following site to see if he is listed there. If he is, you can order
a copy of his SS Application which MAY give the name of his parents. If
you find the SS site, it may also tell you where to send for that
Application, which would be the first document he filled out when he
applied for his SS card.
