Rev. H. M. Turner was the first black man ever commissioned a chaplain in the
United States military. He served with black units during the Civil War.
I have an original copy of the December 12, 1863 issue of Harper's Weekly
which contains an article on Rev. Turner, including a picture. If anyone is
interested I have scanned the article and will be glad to send a copy.
