Your friend has asked me to help with your grandfather
Charles Sherman Turner. I am sorry for not bringing any
good news here, for there is no connection between yours
and my great-great-grandmother's brother Charles W. Turner
(CWT) for the reasons as follows.
Yours was born GA 1876.....CWT was born VA 1853 -- wide gap
Yours died 1968..................CWT died 1906. -- wide gap!
Yours died in VA.................CWT did not die in VA.
Yours lived in ALA...............CWT did not live in ALA.
Yours' religion?....................CWT was a practicing Episcopalian.
CWT's mother's name was NOT Mary Jane White. CWT's father's
name was NOT Bill Turner either. Your grandfather and CWT were,
therefore, definitely not the same person as I laid out the reasons
above.
Church records in GA and ALA as well as the 1870 - 1930 census
returns are very helpful. In 1800s, parents usually had four, seven,
nine, or even 12 children, so it is quite possible for your grandfather
to have siblings. Tax lists record the names and the ages of parents'
children. Check deeds, city directories from 1876 to 1968. Did your
grandfather ever serve in the First World War? Look for a hint about
your grandfather's middle name "Sherman". Maybe Sherman was
your grandfather's mother's maiden name? Stories have it that
many boys hated schools and ran away westwadly for an adventure
in 1800s. Some of them felt guilty for being out of contact with their
parents after running away. Ever heard of a story about the
Prodigal son.
