Lee,
It is interesting to note that Fielding Turner (b. 1706 Northumberland Co.- d.1794 Loudoun Co.) of VA was a shoemaker/corwainer as well as a planter. At least one of his sons (James Hawley Turner) had showmakers in his line, particularly the branch that ended up in Mobile. Fielding (b.1706) also had a probable brother Edward Turner who had shoemaker tools listed in his inventory at the time of his death in 1738, Northumberland/Westmoreland Co., VA. This Edward had a son named EDWIN TURNER who I believe may have migrated to Halifax, NC. There are Turners named Fielding there as well as Edwin and other family names.
To my knowledge no one has been able to make the connection between Fielding of Northumberland Co. and the NC Turners, but I believe there's a good chance that the Halifax Co., NC Turners descend from Edwin of VA.. Of course these Halifax Co. Turners migrated to other places as time passed so when you see the name Fielding in TN, etc. it could be from this NC line as well.

I've noticed that a great many Turner's were shoemakers, including my own line in NC. Is there a reason for this or is it simply a coincidence? And if the answer is obvious, please forgive my ignorance.
