In June of 2002, my husband and I had the chance to go to Witchita
Falls, Texas for a month. While there, I did research on my Great Grandfather, who
died in the State Hospital in Witchita Falls in 1929. I wanted to see if I
could get his medical records so that we, as a family, could learn the cause of
his death and possibly learn where my Great Grandmother died. I went to the
State Hospital and spoke to a woman who gave me a toll free number to call in
Austin, where the medical records are now kept. I called the number in
AUstin, spoke to a very nice woman, who took my information and said she would have
to go to another building to see if they had the requested information. Told
me that she would call me back in about 20 minutes. I was sure that this
would not happen....and told my husband so. Imagine my surprize when she DID CALL
ME BACK. And she told me that she would print the information from the
microfilm and send to me at our address in Colorado. When I asked her for the
total cost...so I could mail out a check that day....she told me NO CHARGE. Well,
again, I thought nothing would be sent to me....so I simply said
"Thank-you"...and continued with the trip. Arrived home several weeks later....and there
was a large packet of information waiting for me. Over 50 pages of
information, copies of letters written from the Director of the Hospital to my
Grandfather, one of his brothers, and one of his sisters. And a letter dated 6 yrs
after the death of my Great Grandfather stating that my Grandfather was owed $10
for overpayment of my Great Grandfather's account! I was very pleased and
extremely Thankful for this information...as it answered many questions and
speculations that we have had for yrs.
If I am able to locate the toll free number...I will be sure and post it.
