Thanks for your kind words, Paul, and I'm glad that you will link some of my
site with yours. Actually, most of my cemeteries are in Houston/Trinity
counties. The ones in the Spring area are ones that I did near home when I
couldn't get further out. I discovered that there are a lot of interested
parties in Harris County and I seem to be more needed in rural areas.
I see that someone has responded to your "where" question. If you're still
not sure, they are both near my house and I can give you more detailed
directions. I do have overview photos. I'll look in my files on the
weekend. Unfortunately, Harris County has little online and only some
inventories in print.
A lot of my satisfaction comes from people who never would have been able to
see the headstones of their loved ones or ancestors, because they live far
away or can't get out. While I agree with the double work problem, I still
think there is a lot of merit (and happiness) to be derived from (what I
call) photo transcription work and just actually getting a list on line that
people can access free of charge where ever they are.
It's also a lot of fun having an unusual hobby!

Hello Letty --
40 cemeteries!! That's GREAT! I took a look at some of your pages and will
be linking to some of them from my "Burial Sites in Harris County" pages
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~prsmith/alpha_cem_a-f.htm if that's
OK.
Can you tell me where the Grave of Seal McDougle and the Spring Cemetery
(behind a Church of Christ) are located?
Also, if you have general pictures of the cemetery (not the individual
stones), I'd love to have copies of them for my pages.
You seem to concentrate your work in Spring. A bit closer to Tomball, just
northwest of Hooks airport and on the southwest side of 2920 is Willow Creek
Cemetery. It's a beautiful old cemetery and, if you haven't come across it
before, I think you'd really enjoy it.

I also have done over 40 cemeteries. The video tape is a good idea, we
did
that at first. We don't plat either as we are unable to devote that much
time. Early on we invested in a digital camera. We now go to each
cemetery, take a shot of the entrance, a shot of any historical marker
and
then photograph each headstone. One person takes the photo and the other
will work ahead to clean debris and handwrite any hard-to-read stones. I
transfer my photos to my computer at home, pull each photo up one at a
time
and put the data into an Excel spreadsheet and refer to the notes as need
be. Excel 97 has a nifty (and automatic) "Save as HTML" feature that
will
set up a nice grid for you with no web experience necessary. Then I add
the
links for each name with the corresponding photo. A cemetery with about
100
stones takes about 8 hours of computer work.
Then I send one CD with the list and photos to the local historical
society
to archive.
I, also, would be happy to help anyone out with the computer part.

My husband and I are interested in learning how to transcribe some
cemeteries. Can someone give us some tips on the do's and don'ts and how
to
keep the information we collect?
