Thanks Lori,
I've decided that I have no intention on giving up on this. Someone needs
to do this coordination, either myself or someone else, and I don't really
care which it is. So I guess I'm the one to do it.
I know Access and a little bit of SQL. Access is not a viable engine for
this kind of a project. I've been planning on learning SQL and PHP for a
project of my own (non-genealogy), but have been putting it off. Now I have
a good excuse to push myself into learning those two languages.
I would like everyone to dream a little dream. If you were the one building
this database, what would you put into it? Would you want to be able to
search for a first name alone? Would you want driving directions to a given
cemetery? Would you want to be able to search the entire state for a given
date range and surname, or soundex code? Would you want links to pictures?
Would you want tombstone inscriptions? Would you want data supplemented
from the county records?
Give me an idea of what you want to see. I don't promise anything, but
there's no reason not to plan ahead. :)

Subject: Centralized Database
Tammy:
Please don't give up on the idea of a centralized database. I am so tired
of having to go through each county's site, then each cemetery in that
county, trying to find ancestors. It is fine as long as you know what
county and cemetery they are buried in, but if you just know they are buried
somewhere in Texas, it is very frustrating and time consuming. I have a
great-great-grandfather whose entire family is buried in Bee County, so I
kept looking for his grave there, both on the net and even in person. If a
distant cousin hadn't told me recently that our ancestor was buried in Live
Oak county, I would never have found him! He is the only one of my
ancestors buried in that county, and I would have not had any reason to look
for his grave there. A centralized database would make things SO much
easier!
