Subject: [TX-CEMETERY-PRESERVATION] PROJECT: Hillcrest Cemetery in Bell County, TX
Date: Sat, 28 Sep 2002 13:06:06 -0500
For those of you interested in Bell County cemeteries, here is an
announcement I recently posted on the TXBELL about an upcoming inventory
workday for Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple. Anyone who would like to help
out would certainly be welcome. This large cemetery (84 acres) is
really popular on information requests. Hillcrest Cemetery predates the
City of Temple and has a Confederate section. Please drop Mary Lou a
note if you would like to volunteer.
Thanks!

================================================
Well folks, this is the date a lot of you have been waiting for. We
have now set a workday for initiating the inventory of Hillcrest
Cemetery in Temple. Hillcrest is likely the largest cemetery in Bell
County and a lot of you ask about this one. Currently, researchers must
rely upon the old plot maps in the cemetery office to find a marker.
This goal of this project will be to assemble a fresh new inventory of
the cemetery and have it online in electronic search-enabled format.
(You have probably seen the results of a similar project with North
Belton Cemetery.) Of course, we plan to add a lot more photographs to
our current collection.
As with North Belton Cemetery, volunteer Mary Lou Duke is a major part
of putting together this project. This time, she is working with
cemetery manager Pat Benoit and the cemetery association, who are fully
behind getting this accomplished. (The cemetery association is
non-profit, by the way.) We anticipate the planned date to be pleasant
weather. We need as many bodies as possible out there helping out, even
if you can't stay the entire day. The collected information stands to
be a huge resource to those researching their Bell County ancestors.
Remember that we depend entirely on volunteers for our online material
and never charge for or restrict our information in any way. My plan is
to be out there...see you on site!
Here are the details from Mary Lou:
