General comment: Reference 5. states (p. 32) that Lt Col Scurry,
Confederate field commander at Glorieta, reported Confederate losses
as 36 KIA and 60 wounded whereas Reference 7. states (p. 260) that
between 42 and 48 soldiers were KIA and 60 wounded. The above table
shows 44 KIA and an additional 13 soldiers as mortally wounded; i.e.,
probably died in the Confederate Santa Fe hospital after 3/28/1862.
These include soldiers KIA or mortally wounded at Apache Canyon
(3/26/1862). Given the number of KIA-mortally wounded in the above
table the webmaster believes that Reference 7. is more nearly
accurate. The precise number of Confederate soldiers KIA-mortally
wounded at Glorieta-Apache Canyon will likely never be determined.
Note 1: Maj Shropshire was buried adjacent to the mass grave of
Confederate soldiers KIA at Battle of Glorieta (3/28/1862). His
remains were re-interred on 8/5/1990 at his birthplace in Valley
Forge, KY alongside his parents (Ref 1.).
Note 2: Maj Raguet was buried at Masonic Cemetery (Santa Fe, NM),
then transferred to either Fairview Cemetery (Santa Fe, NM) or
possibly back to TX (Ref 1.). Maj Raguet's age (at commission) and
muster loaction are extracted from Ref 5.
Note 3: Capt Buckholts was buried at Masonic Cemetery (Santa Fe, NM)
then moved to Fairview Cemetery (Santa Fe, NM) (Ref 1.) -- however,
his burial location is unknown. There is speculation that his remains
were re-interred to Texas.
Note 4: Pvts Hanna and Cotton were buried in the mass grave at
Glorieta, NM and their remains were positively identified as a result
of matching forensic ages, nature of death wound, etc (Ref 1.).
Note 5: Soldiers that were possibly buried in the mass grave at
Glorieta, NM (3/28/1862). There are more than 31 names including Maj
Shropshire and Pvts Cotton and Hanna -- however, the list can't be
further reduced given the current data (Ref 1.).
Note 6: KIA or mortally wounded at Glorieta, NM (3/28/1862) (Ref 2.).
Pvt Jones' second initial is "E" (Ref 3.) or "C" (Ref 5.).
Note 7: KIA or mortally wounded at Glorieta, NM (3/28/1862) (Ref 3.).
Pvt Riedel's (Reidel) age is cited as 18 (Ref 5.).
Note 8: Soldiers mortally wounded at Glorieta, NM (3/28/1862) or
became sick & presumed to have died at CS Army hospital in Santa Fe,
NM and buried in SFNC, NM either in 1862 (Ref 1.) or re-interred in
1895 (Ref 4.).
Note 9: Died in Santa Fe, NM as Sibley was evacuating (Ref 3.).
Note 10: One of five Confederate soldiers who were severly wounded at
Apache Canyon (3/26/1862) or Battle of Glorieta or became sick and
buried at the Masonic Cemetery (Santa Fe, NM) in 1862 and whose
remains were re-interred at SFNC in 1895 (Ref 4.).
Note 11: Ref 4. cites Pvt William Ohram as a Texas Ranger -- however,
Ref 1. cites Pvt William Oram (Ohram) as being a member of Co B, 5th
TMV and Refs 3. & 5. show Pvt Oram (Ohram) as being a member of Co C,
5th TMV -- although he may have transferred to Co B later. Ref 5.
cites Pvt Oram (Ohram) as died of illness in the CS Army (Santa Fe,
NM) hospital.
Note 12: Ref 4. cites Pvt Thomas Cater as a Texas Ranger -- however,
Ref 5. cites Pvt Thomas Cater as a member of the "Brigands." This
unit was never mustered into the Confederate Army, instead, they were
employed by Sibley's Quartermaster Department. Pvt Cator joined the
Brigands in Santa Fe, NM on March 21, 1862 and his age as 24 (Ref 5.).
Note 13: Mortally wounded at Apache Canyon (3/26/1862) (Ref 6.).
Note 14: KIA at Apache Canyon (Ref 5.).
Note 15: Believed KIA at Glorieta (Ref 5.).
